How is this fair to potential first time home buyers that have lived in the UK since birth?

This could easily be spun as "Immigrants from Hong Kong inject $1.3 billion into the British economy". Why the focus on "they're stealing our homes"?

Well, the UK kept them as a colony for so long and then handed them over to China so I find this completely fine.

It isn't but since the UK just votes in Conservatives and Neo-Libs, who refuse to give potential first time buyers a helping hand this is what you ultimately get.

Speaking as a someone living in England no the absolute common bigotry and hatred towards foreigners is not "hilarious"

People stabbing you and screaming racial abuse in the street isn't funny

Police turning a blind eye isn't a joke.

People calling for further and further right-wing governments and isolationism isn't a laughing matter

Well its a problem in Canada, Australia, US with foreign investors from a certain country just buying up all the houses and properties and just leaving them empty without even renting them out

how is this fair? The government should only allow citizens of their country they live in to buy houses

  1. Hong Kong and the UK have a special relationship to the point that they aren't really seen as "foreigners" in the same way most people would be. The people that the UK opened up special rights to were literally born in a territory that was ruled by the British and when the territory was handed over the China it was done with an agreement, that the Chinese have violated, that was intended to give them certain human rights.
  2. From a quick google search London's residential real estate is worth about 1.5 trillion pounds which is more than 1,500 times the amount that Hong Kongers have bought up. Not exactly 'buying up all the houses'.

Because London already has a horrible housing shortage.

Our governments are toothless and easily corrupted. A combination that screws over the citizens, and further increases the divide between the rich and everyone else.

Wasn't the quote in the article "4 per cent of London homes sold during the period", not "4% worth of London Homes"? Still quite significant but the title makes it sound like HKers now own 4% of all London homes.

[]giacomo135 116 points 13 hours ago
Not only that but its actually 8% of sales to foreigners for the year.

[]throwawaybaldingman 23 points 9 hours ago*
That's... nothing
There should be laws against journalism that has potentially antagonizing titles.
Also I have several good friends from Hong Kong. They are good people anecdotally. Well educated and work hard too so I see it as a win. I'm Bulgarian and the Bulgarians in the UK are known to cause damage. Roma groups at home love to tear down rail lines/telephone lines for material and harass women. Yet I don't see many people vindicating them over Asians

[]FruitbatNT 92 points 13 hours ago
I was wondering who decided the entire London housing market is only worth around $30 Billion.

Some comments from reddit. Yeah the title makes it sound like 4% of homes in london are bought up by them. But its only 4% of homes for sale in that period. Massive difference.
I highlighted the good point in bold.

Australia does have problems with investors from China.

As far as I can tell, these homes are being purchased by immigrants fleeing Hong Kong. Who are notably fighting the threat of Chinese occupation at the moment, which would strip their freedom.

^THIS.
Technically, because they were a British colony for so long, their really more British than anything else (seriously, most people in Hong Kong speak ENGLISH and it's usually with a British accent. I've done business in Hong Kong in the past and everyone I met there had a British accent and spoke English perfectly). I'm happy if they manage to get away from the CCP.

Thats a stretch. They are more likely to sound like Jackie Chan than a British person.

No, most people in Hong Kong do not speak English anymore, and those that do not have a British accent. That being said, too bad only the rich are able to get out of there.
