Teacher filmed hitting child, 6, with wooden paddle for damaging computer
A teacher could face criminal charges after she was filmed by a mother as she repeatedly hit a young girl with a wooden panel. Melissa Carter was recorded bending the crying six-year-old over and hitting her with the piece of wood. The girls mother had been asked to go to Central Elementary School in Clewitson, Florida, on April 13 because it was alleged her daughter had caused $50 of damage to a computer. She went to the principals office where she found Carter and a school clerk with her daughter. In footage captured on the mothers phone which she hid in her purse, a school worker can be seen positioning the crying girl over a chair before she was struck three times.
Speaking to WINK-TV, she said: The principal started to scream. The hatred with which she hit my daughter, I mean it was a hatred that, really Ive never hit my daughter like she hit her. I had never hit her. She added that she decided to hide her phone and capture the alleged abuse against her daughter to expose the school for other parents, and so she had physical proof to take to the authorities. She said: Nobody would have believed me. I sacrificed my daughter, so all parents can realize whats happening in this school. The mother said she took her daughter to a doctor later that day to record the red marks and bruises that were apparently caused by the paddle.
She said: Im going to get justice for my daughter because if I could not do it in front of her, Im going to do it with justice. Police and childrens services are investigating and state attorneys are considering bringing charges. Bret Provinsky, a lawyer for the family, said: Thats aggravated battery. Theyre using a weapon that can cause severe physical, harm. The child is terrified, she feels vulnerable. Theres nothing she can do in the hands of these adults, who treated her so brutally, savagely, sadistically. Neither Carter nor the school district rave commented on the case.
