I would prefer that they have a good story first and foremost, and not have a stupid premise.

Conjuring 1 and 2 were good movies? I didn't notice. I thought they were pretty mediocre at best.

Velvet Buzzsaw was pretty good but it's also pretty dumb and campy so that might not be what you want. But unfortunately much stock is being put into pretentious slow paced art horror flicks now. Stuff like Midsommar and Hereditary. In my opinion they're all garbage. Conjuring is one of the last few good old style horror movies.

The Woman in Black (1989)
Never saw the remake, but the original is one of the most effective ghost movies ever for not relying on special effects or jump scares. For a newer movie, maybe The Awakening (2011). Rebecca Hall plays a paranormal investigator in the 1920's. I remember it being pretty good. At least comparable to The Conjuring movies. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

If its not too old for your tastes (early aughties) one of my favorite scary movies was Darkness Falls as a teen. Little newer, the Silent Hill movies.

I've heard the Babadook is really good but haven't watched it myself. Cabin in the Woods is a horror parody but honestly it can be kind of scary at times. Highly recommend it though. The Witch isn't traditional horror but I enjoyed it a lot. The people I watched with were not impressed because it was not the kind of horror they were expecting.
