Tattoos pretty much started in the navy (another reason why its the best branch) Swallows are known for their long migration patterns, so sailors get them tattooed to them to signify a safe voyage home. It's also said if a sailor drowns, they will carry his soul to heaven A sailor can get 1 swallow per 5000 nautical miles sailed.
