Buy this game famalam. Definitely worth $15 with the amount of time you will put into this game.

Hacker's Memory is also on sale but I already own it.

If I'm not a fan of JRPGs usually (like I disliked Dragon Quest XI) will I like something like this?

I do enjoy Pokemon, though I haven't exactly played them in years at this point lol.

Its similar to the original Digimon World, if you remember that at all. like a pet-raising sim meets adventure game.

lol. I havent played the sequel so idk how much they changed, but the original was like...

Youve got partner Digimon that follow you around. Time/resource management is a major gameplay focus. You have to balance exploring the world and progressing the adventure with raising you Digimon.

when it gets hungry, you feed it. When it gets hurt or sick you use medicine. When it needs to poop, you need to find a bathroom. (Unless you want Sukamon then just let your Digimon shit wherever they want). Managing this stuff while exploring means you have to balance how much deeper into the unknown you want to go, or when to turn back and regroup for later. Because if your Digimon faints three times, it dies and you need to start over from the Baby evolution stage.

You get some stat raises from battles, but mostly from training at the gym. So you need to balance training with exploration. But you need to balance the training, as well, because if you over-exert your Digimon it counts as a care-mistake. (If you make too many mistakes it evolves into Numemon lol).

Digimon evolve based on their age, determined by a real-time clock in game. What they evolve into depends on their stats and some other conditions at the time of evolution. (Weight is a big one. If your Digimon has similar stats, but is thin, you might get Meramon. But if its a fatass, you get Monochromon. So feeding too becomes something you can modulate)

Battles are real time, mostly automatic and happen as you run into them on the overworld. But you can give your Digimon more detailed and useful commands as its Int stat increases. (Not all Digimon benefit from high int though, and will be fine just spamming the do what you want or attack command)

Idk what the story of the new one is, but the gameplay loop of the original was finding new Digimon to recruit to the main city. As you did this, new shops and facilities would open up. And over the course of recruiting these Digimon youd also unlock new areas of the world to explore.
