A young child from southwestern Minnesota has died of COVID-19 complications, according to the state Department of Health.
While coronavirus deaths in children are rare, they can occur even in otherwise healthy children, health officials said.
Since the start of the pandemic, three Minnesota children under age 18 have died due to COVID-19, the health department said in a statement.
Marshall Public Schools Superintendent Jeremy Williams says the child, who died Sunday, was a first-grader at Park Side Elementary. Williams says crisis team members will be on hand at the school to support those in need, WCCO-TV reported.
Gov. Tim Walz released a statement Monday afternoon in response to the death.
It is simply heartbreaking to hear that COVID-19 has taken the life of someone so young, Walz said. My thoughts are with the Minnesota family grieving the loss of their beloved child. There is no grief more profound than the loss of family.
Walzs office said the child did not have underlying health conditions.
According to the school district, 22 students and staff are in quarantine at the elementary school. Williams says they are following guidelines from state health officials and will continue in-person instruction.
Department of Health officials say children under 16 years old are not yet eligible for COVID-19 vaccination, so the best approach is making sure those around them are vaccinated, as well as testing, social distancing, wearing face masks and washing hands frequently.

I still don't understand why Republicans are so adamant on sending kids back to school. Its not safe yet, online classes are working just fine for now, and they gain nothing from it. They're not helping the teachers because even teachers are against this...Why is the GOP so fuckin stupid?

It's about taking a position opposite science, expertise, and most importantly Democrats. GOP positions have no merits beyond those three things.

America didn't do jack shit about guns when some fuckwit massacred a preschool, I doubt any anti-masker is going to be moved to tears about a child who died of Covid.

GOP are for morons who can't think for themselves. They vote for the rich assholes that will continue to fuck them over just as long they say the things they want to hear that make the otherside upset.

I am 100% all for shitting on the GOP about sending kids back to school, but that stupidity has infected Dems as well. We have zero reason to send kids back right now. We have zero reason to be opening up period.

It's parents who don't want to be parents essentially. School was free nanny service for them.

I imagine Tucker's response to this would be that these are acceptable losses and the kids knew what they signed up for.

Also the kid had a million existing conditions and to call this a COVID-related death isn't fair.

Also the kid was probably no angel and has a criminal record.

I should probably stop before I depress myself.

People keep saying remote learning is bad for kids, and somehow higher chance of death isn't.

Not everywhere.
My oldest has had nothing but problems with his laptops the schools have given him the last 2 years.

In 8th grade, he couldn't log on their servers at all. We lost count how many times we had to return the laptop to the point we just stopped giving a shit if he failed. It's not his fault the school can't get their servers to work correctly. He wasn't the only kid it was happening to.

They still let him go into 9th grade and now its an issue at the high school as well. The servers LAKE GIBSON use fucking suck and its teachers are fucking dumb.

Every day we get a phone call saying he missed "insert class". How did he miss class if he's on the laptop & in that class.. we were told by the office some teachers take role call at the end of class. Then why is it still counted against him if its her fault for doing it at the end of class. They are fucking stupid.

Tyranthraxus: Parents dont have to work to make money to provide for their kids. Theyd should quit their jobs so they can watch their kids all day every day.

Online learning is not as effective as some people think it is, especially for younger students in elementary school that aren't used to staring at a computer screen all day. I'm all for trying to keep kids out of school until things get better but the reality is it's a lot more difficult than it seems. It doesn't help that a lot of school districts are half assing everything and putting all the responsibilities in the hands of the teachers who already have more things on their plate than they can deal with.

Online learning isn't perfect, but it works just fine all things considered...the extremely contagious disease that's killing people should rank higher on the list of priorities right now.
