Back in my days, anyone claiming that Mario/Pikachu was bigger than Mickey Mouse would be laughed at, but it appears that Disney has quietly retired the character, nobody gives a fuck about the mouse nowadays

Yes. Seeing how Disney mainly uses him for pre-school shows. I mean he is used outside of that too but that is his main purpose.

Yes. Disney Junior still has plenty of Mickey. Granted, I don't think it's anything new.

I get the impression they'd know who he is, but he wouldn't hold the same significance he did to past generations.

Clearly you dont have kids if you dont think Mickey is still popular. Just turn it on Disney Jr. for five minutes and youll see how popular he still is.

I think there was a Mickey Mouse series that came out around the 80th birthday thing a while ago. Had this weird, sort of retro, but not really art style.

was pretty okay from what I remember, but I only saw a few episodes.

Yeah, most of the merch right now is in that style. It's basically because the 1920s cartoons are actually going into the public domain this time, and since they can't change copyright laws again, they're trying to capitalize on the image and style as much they can.

I dunno - Pokemon is literally the biggest entertainment property in the world. It beats everything, including Disney. Maybe that's just dollar value though.

Walt himself more or less quietly retired Mickey Mouse in his declining years. He stopped voicing the character after Mickey and the Beanstalk and positioned Tinkerbell as the de-facto mascot of the company. Mickey rebounded after Walt's passing.

Today, I think there's another reason for why Disney is slowly letting go of Mickey Mouse: he's approaching 100 years old. There are only so many loopholes one can find to avoid a character falling into the public domain. And while Disney could always re-trademark a version of that character, as they've done with several public domain characters, they won't be able to stop others from using traditional Mickey in stories of their own.

By the time other companies are able to legally utilize Mickey Mouse as a character, Disney will have relegated him to such a minor role that nothing they do with him could hurt the Disney image.
