basically people in a room (that as a AP in it) where saying they'd connect to wifi and then after a while it would disconnect. they'd connect again and it kept happening.

i ask our network guy if he sees anything funky with our aps. he says theres an AP that says its disconnected. i go into that room, which is a floor under the room with issues, and reset it. he says its online again.

after that, no more issues. but that wasn't even the ap that these folks should have been connecting to. if it was, the RSSI would have been high but we checked and it said everyone connected had a strong connection

all the APs broadcast the same ssid

what did i do?

Obviously with the disconnected one out of commission, the supposed faulty one was being congested.

as far as i know, it was 3 people. unless it also broadcasts student ssid too

but even then, i think theres like 50 students here max.

actually, maybe that was the problem.

online documentation says these aps should be able to handle 200 users.

maybe it was working extra hard cuz the connections were so bad? is that a thing?

One thing to keep in mind with wifi on multiple floors is that floors/ceilings don't always degrade wifi signals very much. The one in the floor might indeed be giving a strong enough signal that devices at user height or floor level would try to connect to the ones on the ceiling on the floor below instead.

This issue kicked my ass once at my old job. Someone said they were having trouble connecting to wifi and I swore up and down the issue had to be in a certain spot, but they were actually connecting in the garage below that spot.

yeah thats what i was wondering too. but when i checked the RSSI was 45, and i was right under the thing. i dont even get 45 in my house lol. i can't imagine windows or macos determining that 45 is too weak and to switch to something with something even slightly weaker... but i mean maybe it did?

If they go from downstairs to upstairs, their devices may still try to hang onto the downstairs AP if the signal never gets too weak.
