The reason Aragorn got stuffed at the end was that Gimli and Legolas were being stuffed in the first place, should probably remember that part!

Gimli or Legolas has no business being in the Top 3. Top Fellowship ranking is so clearly Aragorn, Gandalf, Sam, that I find any other opinions baffling.

I've always liked Frodo, but I finally read the books for the first time a couple years ago. That really helped me to appreciate Sam more.

I haven't seen the movies since I was a kid when they came out. But I did read the books a few years back, and it amazes me how strong of a character Samwise is, especially compared to the rest of the cast. I don't get the hype behind Gimli or Legolas at all; am I missing something, or do they just work better in the films?

Though I feel like my taste in LOTR is outside the norm; I greatly prefer the Sam, Frodo, and Gollum storyline to the Aragorn plot. Like, to the point of loving one and being meh about the other.

Me neither. Gimli is fine when he's not used as comic relief, I find nothing remotely interesting about Legolas. And I don't dislike Frodo at all but Samwise is just such a good character, far and away the best imo.

H... how are the hobbits all gone. This might be the single most bizarre ranking I've ever seen. Legolas and Gimli are barely characters.

I like Gandalf the best of those who remain. His speech about not all who live/die deserving the other is one of my favourites.

And yet without him Frodo would have failed and the ring would never have been destroyed.
Such good character development.

It would have failed without Bilbo, Frodo, Gandalf, Merry, Tom Bombadil, Aragorn, Glorfindel, Elrond, Boromir, Legolas, Gimli, Gollum and Faramir too. But the Ring would gotten the least far if it had been left solely up too Sam, that's for sure. Even Pippin might have gotten lucky and gotten as far as Bree.

it doesn't matter if Sam would've failed alone

like if you want to be pedantic and list all the people who helped Frodo along the way, fine, but Sam was the driving force that kept him going when he wanted to give up when it was just the two of them and Gollum

the dude was so loyal to Frodo that he could put on the ring to save him and then have zero problems giving it right back to him

Sam is the heart of the Fellowship, and absolutely has the best character growth through the series. I'm not sure how you get either Legolas or Gimli over him without basing the decision on some bit of cinematography from the films. They're pretty much the literal definition of 2D stand-ins for their respective races, and even the part where their cultural heritage could have had some impact on the story (Moria) it's still Frodo and Gandalf that really get shit done.

If it doesn't matter if Sam failed alone then neither should it matter that the others would fail alone. Yet it does. Frodo's part in the Fellowship is deemed less worthy of consideration as it would not have been successful without Sam, yet the opposite is somehow not the case.

As much as I like Gimli and Legolas, this is the reason why I would never put them anywhere close to Aragorn, Gandalf and Sam.

I don't think it makes Frodo's part less worthy. The dude still had the biggest burden to carry of any of them, and Sam was there to help him carry it all the way to the end. That's what makes his role in it so special. Sam hated the ring more than perhaps any of them, and yet when Frodo is in danger, he doesn't hesitate to use it to save him.
