Is this MK9 on PS3 gen?

Did it reboot the series, and then MK10 and MK11 are continuations?

I know that I bought MK10 a while back and started playing it and dropped it, without realizing it was part of a reboot, and now literally just realized that I own MK9 on PS3.

So kinda thinking I might play through

MK9 is both a sequel and a reboot lol.

Mortal Kombat Armageddon was the end of the world. (The events of Tavens campaign are non-canon)

Raiden sends information about those events back in time to MK1 Raiden, and the original timeline of MK1-3 plays out with a handful of twists when Raiden tries to change fate and avoid Armageddon. It ends at the same place as the original MK3, though some characters fates are changed.

MK10 and 11 take place in the new (altered) timeline.

It sounds like maybe knowledge of MK 1-3 would be good to have, but MK 4-8 is not needed?

Knowledge of the original trilogy is nice, but it mostly amounts to nostalgic hey I remember this!

But the game is pretty on the nose when it comes to the altered events. You can go in fresh and not miss anything.

there are some characters and references to the later games, but nothing that isnt going to be explained

MK9, X, and 11 are the three "modern" titles that are conventional fighting games with a hit or miss approach on authenticity, polish, and most of all balance. If you want to play online, I'd get 11. If you want the best bot stomping, get MK9. MKX is the odd child imo.

Fwiw I've been having a hell of time playing ranked sets as Skarlet and just letting my ass get whooped to learn the fundamentals, then slowly winning most of my matches now. Has a lot of rotational towers for AI and co-op and while I hear rumors it's been abandoned (but unannounced yet) honestly all three are older fighting games at this point.

It'll be interesting to see what they do with modern console hardware in mind for the next one.
