It's not something to feel good about. We had clear video evidence of him murdering George Floyd and it took over a year for him to answer for it. Justice system is still incredibly flawed and this verdict doesn't mean we're headed in the right direction.

Any celebration over this is sad; you're essentially celebrating what the system should have been doing all along. Something about it all just doesn't sit well with me.

This case is monumental for the precedent it will set in regards to accountability for the type of extra-judicial murders that cops are committing everyday. This isnt a fucking solution, its a step toward a solution that should have been taken over a century ago. It doesnt have to be ideal to be meaningful

are you legitimately dumb? this is big because 99% of people expected this to be an innocent trial as it usually is. I know life isnt perfect, but not-perfect is better than hellish-shit.

Small steps are better than no steps, true. But the result of this case isnt good enough.

The right to a speedy trial is about keeping the start of a trial from being delayed too long after indictment, not about keeping the actual trial process as short as possible.

If it's not chauvin it's someone else. People are just wasting people's time at this point. agendas and more agendas. The truth is still not even being talked about.. They are still hyping up people who are just as bad because it fits their agendas. True love is still very rare in this world. Been watching that scene from the princess bride your ears you keep and I'll tell you why.

verdict-is-accountability-not-justice-2021-4

"The jury's verdict delivers accountability for Derek Chauvin, but not justice for George Floyd. Real justice for him and too many others can only happen when we build a nation that fundamentally respects the human dignity of every person," Sanders said in a tweet.

i mean, it's a good step, we just have to continue on this path so everyone can get equal justice and cops are held accountable to their actions

How does this affect peoples lives really? It's not like people are going to stop being assholes. Every step taken just means some other nonsense and there is plenty of that out there no one is even talking about. If anything the stuff they are is even more ridiculous.

That's the thing with sense is the people who have it aren't talking about it.

Not holding you in prison for decades awaiting trial.

If it were your freedom on the line or you or your loved one who had been victimized do you want the courts to rush the case thru or do you want them to take the proper amount of time to try and get it right?

I'm happy he's going to prison but I'm really hoping we get sweeping social and systemic change. Let this be the first part of the end of police immunity and police reform, itself also a part of the large fight against institutionalized racism.
There's been talk of having departments and/or individual officers carry liability insurance. As it stands now, the city pays damages out of its liability insurance. Any increase in premium is passed on to the taxpayers by the city.

If a department or an officer had to carry their own insurance, bad departments and especially officers would be singled out by the insurer who would request a higher premium. This would be taken from their pension fund.

Bad drivers pay more for insurance. Bad departments and officers should too.

It is legislatively possible - the threat of it got the LAPD to reform in the early 2000s (still suck though but better than some other places).

It will probably never happen. Especially in the South and Midwest.

That's literally what started Black Lives Matter to begin with. Black people were being killed and white people were being found not guilty for those deaths (not just police). The system was not doing what it should have been, so people started protesting (and rioting).

Obviously, this doesn't solve the larger issue, but people are a little more hopeful that murder will be punished like it's supposed to be.

It's a tiny step, but it's one in the right direction for once.

Many people expected a hung jury, we got a quick result. Most expected he would not be found guilty of 2nd degree murder, he was found guilty of all charges.

It doesn't mean that everything is fine but it showed there's a floor, as low as it may be. If a cop does something that blatant, in front of the entire country, there will be consequences. Now, we just need to work on raising that bar.

It really is though. Black people can celebrate a racist murderer being accountable with being obligated to inform the general public that we're still aware of the long road towards meaningful criminal justice reform

Its insulting to our collective intelligence. We can walk and chem gum at the same time You sound like one of the people whining when we celebrated Obama's election
