During the Middle Ages, black cats and rabbits were believed to be witches who had taken those forms. In England, they were thought to be witch's familiars, which was a demonic spirit given to a witch by Satan who would teach the witch magic and also fetch items for spells that the witch couldn't get herself. The witch would nurse the familiar some of her blood from a wound on her breast called a witch's teat.

In fact, to make a lucky rabbit's foot, you had to capture a rabbit on a witches Sabbath. It was believed that a witch would be forced to take the form of a rabbit or some other animal. Taking the foot also took some of the witch's magic.

I'm slightly allergic to cats and black cats especially trigger them. I looked it up and apparently whatever dander is in cats exists in black cats moreso than other cats, which would explain why they'd be considered bad luck.

Japan considers black cats very lucky especially for women, in England they used to give a black cat at a marriage or good luck, sailors would often bring black cats on board for good luck, and Scotland also thinks black cats are lucky.

i used to have a black cat. her name was midnight and she was a runt, tiniest little cat youve ever seen but with the biggest(and loudest) personality ever
she passed from kidney failure last year and i still miss my baby girl so much

If I wasnt allergic to cats Id get a black one. I love cats in general and gladly suffer the allergies when around them but probably couldnt do it 24/7.

Main reason they would bring the cats onto ships is because if the cat didn't eat the fish they would know to not eat it also. I'm not saying your wrong though, just wanted to add that.
