I can't speak for the coverage because I was two years old, but I feel like the overarching implications of this particular case far overshadow anything related to OJ.

OJ was in a different time w/ no internet/smart phones, so everyone was watching it on TV, which makes it seem soooo much bigger as everyone just stopped what they were doing to go find a tv to watch the verdict.

I wont speak in absolutes in which was bigger, but OJ was the #1 draft pick in his class and is a Hall of Famer. Guy was a mega celebrity being put on trial. Thats immensely huge.
