Others pointed to the fact that Underwoods ex-girlfriend Cassie Randolph accused him of stalking her last year a point overlooked in many of last weeks reports. Lance Bass summed up some of those less-than-enthusiastic sentiments during an appearance on The Ben & Ashley I. Almost Famous podcast last week. Hes definitely going to get a lot of backlash from the community at first, the former NSYNC star said in the interview. There is a small percentage of the community thats just going to not like the fact he came out this way, that hes monetizing the experience. Bass said Underwoods series would probably ultimately help the [LGBTQ] community, but that it would take some time. When you first come out, most people ... have no clue about the LGBT community, he said. They dont know what the issues are, they have no idea because theyve been so separated from that on purpose. So when someone comes out as a public figure, so many people immediately go to: Screw that! Its too late. This Underwood guy probably isn't like Jussie Smolett, but there's still this element kinda stains the sentiment of coming out because it raises suspicion of underlying motives. Some gay people are embarrassed by other gay people. In Australia, we had an olympic swimmer named Ian Thorpe whom we all new was gay but didn't come out until a few years back and everyone was kinda pissy at him for being such a big wuss about it. Thinking back now, we didn't take into account his side of the story (even though he told it in his coming out interview) and selfishly put him in the role of "failed gay ambassador" even though he'd been a pro athlete since his teens and lived in the public eye the whole time.
