Peloton shares fell 4% in early trading following an "urgent warning" from the United States government telling owners of the company's Tread+ to stop using the machine. On Saturday, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said it has become aware of 39 accidents involving the $4,295 treadmill, including "multiple reports of children becoming entrapped, pinned, and pulled under" the machine. The CPSC said it's urging customers with small children and pets to stop using the machine immediately. A child died in March in an incident involving the machine. That prompted a strongly worded statement from Peloton (PTON), claiming the federal agency's notice is "inaccurate and misleading." The fitness company said there's "no reason" to stop using the machine if safety instructions, such as correctly using its safety key, are followed. Peloton CEO John Foley doubled down on the company's resistance to issue a recall or stop selling the Tread+

In a letter sent to members Sunday, he said that they have "fully cooperated with CPSC" except with a request from the agency asking for "personally identifiable information of certain members" because those members asked their information not be shared with the CPSC. "At no time was Peloton trying to impede CPSC's investigation," Foley said. "We were simply standing behind our members' right to maintain their privacy, and we remain committed to providing this type of information only with a member's consent or pursuant to a subpoena." Foley said that Peloton has "no intention" of stopping sale of the Tread+ and reiterated the company's previous message of keeping the machine away from children under 16 years old and pets. He said that its instructors are now reminding users at the beginning of their streaming classes of the machine's safety instructions, like properly using its safety key, and the company is developing a new software update that will "provide an additional layer of protection against unwanted use of the Tread+."

i think its got to do with how the running machine can tilt up and lift off the ground. pretty sure i've heard of kids/pets/random clutter in your room getting pulled under it.

They're usually built more weight sturdy so it won't make the entire machine flip up as people and pets get trapped underneath.

Because they didn't put any safety features in it. For something priced at nearly $4000, you'd expect an emergency shut off if it isn't properly leveled, wouldn't you?

But for the record, as far as before it flipped, most will run continuously even if nobody is on it.

Even the cheap ones have a flimsy plastic key that must be fully inserted before the damn thing comes on at all. This is just shitty parenting.

Either that or there's no safety shut off switch at all on these Peloton treadmills. I've never owned one so I don't know.

...which still doesn't absolve Peloton of any blame for shittily designing their treadmill. If we said "No shit sherlock" or "this is just shitty _______" to manufacturers and their products all the time like 75% of product recalls would never happen.

Kids can get injured if messing with them while mommy is topping off.

One has inherent danger. The other is a literal exercise machine which should have no inherent danger associated with its operation. Not even remotely comparable

are these incidents isolated to pets and children?

if youre not using the machine - unplug it. This is more on the parents than Peloton. I would never let my daughter be unsupervised playing on a fucking treadmill.

absolutely zero accountability and Im sure peloton has disclaimers stating to keep away from children and pets and to also store it in a clear space.
