A lot of it is just open spaces (having said THAT, I love open beautiful areas), there are lots of small towns, some people seem to have relatively backwards views, and the weather is often cold and wet. Have I got this region all wrong? Or is this pretty accurate?

I am a Californian but I went to university in New England. New Englanders would cringe at calling New York "New England".
Second, if I had to live in New England again, I'd go back to Rhode Island. Half of CT is a suburb of NYC. Parts of the rest of New England can get as racist as South Boston. --- Not everyone is suitable to kill a lion - Maasai proverb. ... Copied to Clipboard!

I lived in New England for 6 years (split between Maine and Massachusetts).
Not one person considered any part of NY as being in New England. Hell, even in Maine, they consider the Portland metro area as "Boston-lite."
