A lot of it is just open spaces (having said THAT, I love open beautiful areas), there are lots of small towns, some people seem to have relatively backwards views, and the weather is often cold and wet. Have I got this region all wrong? Or is this pretty accurate?

First of all, NY isn't a state in New England.

Second, New Hampshire is the best state in the region, and the best in the country if not for the terrible weather. MA is only better if you like cities (although I personally do not like Boston at all).

I mean, New Hampshire aside these are some of the most reliably liberal states in the country. So I don't think this is particularly true of New England.

I am a Californian but I went to university in New England. New Englanders would cringe at calling New York "New England".

Second, if I had to live in New England again, I'd go back to Rhode Island. Half of CT is a suburb of NYC. Parts of the rest of New England can get as racist as South Boston.

I'll be the second to lol.

New Hampshire is the worst state in New England by far. It's the South of New England.

I grew up in NH. I thought it was a great state altogether until the times I travelled west or north of Concord and I realized the southeast pocket was basically spillover from MA of people looking to avoid sales tax.

I've only been there but my ex is from Fitchburg, MA. Its awful and she would complain about it the whole time. Then if i were to say anything she'd defend it to her death. All New Englanders seemed that way too lol.

Like the stereotype of the region seemed to really be true

New York is Mid Atlantic.

NYC was originally New Amsterdam so it has more Dutch roots than England

The only good part of NH is the brick store in Bath.

Other than that VT is way better.

Yeah and that's one of the reasons why it's the best part of the region. No sales tax, more lax laws, less traffic.

White mountains and lakes region are both fantastic. Still close enough to Boston if you want to go there, a few beaches in the state but also close to beaches in Maine or MA.

VT is just a worse version of NH, so this post makes no sense. Shitty small cities full of homeless doesn't make the state look good. Green mountains are inferior to the white mountains.

Rhode Island fucking sucks and New York aint New England
I'll try to meet you halfway. Providence and Newport are cool by New England standards. Outside of that, you're correct about RI.

Providence does have a bit of a mafia problem though.

I've never had a problem with Rhode island and I like Newport.

But it really lacks its own identity. It might as well be a part of Massachusetts.

I lived in New England for 6 years (split between Maine and Massachusetts).

Not one person considered any part of NY as being in New England. Hell, even in Maine, they consider the Portland metro area as "Boston-lite." They consider the real Maine as anything north of Portland (Bangor, Augusta, etc)

To me - as an outsider (people in Maine said "oh, you're from away" when my black ass took my L.A. based Japanese girlfriend to Freeport, ME) - RI seemed like a mixture of MA and CT. It seemed the least racist state in New England.

Nothings stopping people from just driving to and from citys whenever they want.....

So theres no real downsides to living in suburb/rural areas unless you want to be live within a close proximity at all times to what citys have to offer. But that also includes the bad.

I feel like people from Maine tend to be odd. I moved to Georgia last year and I have a coworker who says the most amount of racism he faced was at Cape Cod. But even outside of any racism, I can see how a black guy would feel uncomfortable in a region that's 90%+ white outside of cities.

I left grad school there 20 years ago and it was becoming an issue then. I can only imagine what it's like now. Providence to Boston is 41 miles or about an hour. In L.A. that's not even crosstown.

In New England, you can hear the term "Maineiacs" from time to time.
