And how people were mocking those who were concerned about it? I was looking through them on that site and it was a rough read.

We didnt know. No one did.

I was watching 90 day fiance and the latest episodes were filmed early last year. Everyone said "well hopefully when this corona thing is over in a couple weeks..." Etc.

I'm like damn.

That's probably a good reason not to mock it then.

I do see that he started the general topics, but it's disturbing to look back see how so many posters based their opinions around their feelings for him. @GregShmedley was relentlessly attacked as well.

it's concerning. the numbers are going up and vaccine eligibility is open to all in several days (if they can find an appointment). there's no J&J in play so it makes it harder.

they need to stop the block on it. the benefit are worth the risk if woman are advised not to get the J&J vaccine.

Man if you guys were letting the resident bed shitter formulate your opinions on public health then I dont know what to say.

My sense from talking to people was that everyone felt it was just the media hyping it up like other epidemics (sars/swine flu/H1N1 etc) and Id remind them that the reason those things didnt become a huge problem is because people took them seriously early on.

I remember around March last year when it became obvious how serious it was going to be. That's when people started hoarding supplies because they were afraid of a total lockdown.

Boy was that off the mark.

The problem was the majority of early information about it from what was supposed to be trusted sources like WHO were just straight fucking lies.

  • Oh it's not transmissible
  • Okay it's transmissible but not from human to human
  • Okay it's transmissible from human to human but only from touching and stuff
  • Okay it just goes across the air but if you catch it, it's basically just the flu
  • Masks don't do anything btw
  • Actually masks help tremendously but we lied because we wanted the masks for ourselves

You guys had access to the same information he had. To completely ignore what's going on because "I don't this person who's talking about it" has to be the most braindead move you could make. It shows that you're not curious enough to figure out exactly why something is going on why someone acts a certain way and is hard proof of how you can be manipulated.

I hope you realize how dangerous you are given the fact that you can vote and politicians will take advantage of this.

FWIW, I posted in those topics supporting GregShmedley

Awesome didn't take an educated tone, it was more anti China than actually talking about the virus. That's my point there, people may have seen him shitposting and without knowing anything else dismissed it as conspiracy theorist crying.

The poster in question has an extremely long history of blowing everything similar out of proportion. He was adamant at one point that Ebola was going to kill everyone as well. You say he had the same information we did but it's not like he actually used information to come to the conclusions he did. He used the same baseless overreacting speculation that he always did.

Dude, there were twitter videos of Chinese people quarantined. Heck, I went digging deeper to other forums to keep abreast of the situation since there was a clear dissonance between what officials were saying and what civilians were posting. Being put off by a "The sky is falling!" character is not an excuse. You have to break out of that mindset. I see this all the time in the investing world and I'll admit I'm guilty of this too.

There was a project I introduced a friend to and helped invest in, just under $3K and his investment is now worth over $100K. I was nonchalant and didn't invest much. Of a number of factors of my disinterest, one was that the threads were always headlined with an image of morbid obese chick about to slam on some degenerate dude below. This put me off from going into the threads to keep abreast of the news.

I have other stories I can bring up like what the 4chan community with Chainlink but the point I'm trying to make is that it's in your best interest to investigate and form your own conclusions. If you don't inform yourself because of some weak excuse of "I don't like this dude who's also in it", you are falling into a trap that a number of more devious folks will take advantage. Stop making excuses, own up to your screw up, and stop doing that.

At the time, I had faith that nations like mine were going to take this seriously and lock down the borders at the first sign of trouble. After all, I live on an island nation - quarantine should inherently be an easier process compared to a landlocked country who shares a border with other nations. I also bought into rhetoric that people from places like Italy were scaremongering in a way that would get more and more people worked up in a way that would facilitate more of that initial panic-buying - just because it was happening over there, doesn't mean it would happen over here. That sort of thing.

I was also following an Australian nurse on social media at the time who preached that sort of rhetoric, which fed my confirmation bias and who I saw as a more well-equipped individual to talk about Australia's position in this pandemic.

I can say with the power of hindsight that I was wrong - as was that nurse, who herself acknowledged her failings on the matter - and I apologize for my ignorance.

This really pissed me off. I went out without a mask early days because I trusted Dr. Fauci when he was an anti-masker. I could've at least thrown a bunch of cloth on my face, but no, he deliberately lied to put more lives in danger. He's still on TV making fun of people for wearing 2 masks, what a clown. I wear 2 masks because it's common sense and I trust the science studies supporting it, not an egomaniac doctor that praised Trump.

I do 1 mask + face shield personally. Once I'm fully vaccinated I'll probably drop the face shield and keep just the mask.

I mean, if you look at what happened with SARS, bird flu, swine flu, ebola, zika, etc, it isn't that hard to understand why people would've assumed (during the early days, not at this point) that covid was just the next repeat of all those.

Let's hope this becomes a lesson to the media to stop crying wo---*remembers like 5 other "omg new deadly disease" panics the media tried to throw up in 2020 while covid was still raging* nah, they never will.
