it feels. Like the graphics somehow manage to be noticeably worse than in the first game which was and still is gorgeous looking. Maybe it's the lighting? idk

I think it's really underrated. More of Rapture isn't a problem (well, not until some title made unnecessary DLC out of it)

The very first thing I was reminded of reading the topic title was that the player character is sealed in a diver's suit but can still consume foods and drinks.

I think you are right about the lighting. Some time and attention may have been given to the atmosphere of the first one, while the second was possibly more about adding sytems and shipping it since the foundation was all carried over from the first and did not need to be redeveloped.
