Maybe because the later 2D Metroids spoiled me, I dunno.

Honestly the only parts I liked was the first and last 30 mins of the game (6 and 1/2 hour playthrough)

+ Badass intro level
+ Revisiting Zebes at the start was cool
+ Wall jumping is cool but tricky
+ Reserve tanks
+ Best final boss sequence bar none

- other than the intro/ end, it's standard Metroid stuff. No area stood out except the sunken ship.
- I think the game is very muddy looking and kinda ugly.
- Grapple beam was disappointing
- bosses are meh except that sunken ship boss and the final boss. Even ridley was kinda ehhh.
- the biggest offender, the music and sfx. There only 2 songs that stuck out, and one them is repetitive. Absolutely the weakest 2D Metroid soundtrack.

The sfx... I'm sorry but they sound like garbage. Almost everything in this game sounds garbled or muffled. Missile shots, explosions, lasers. I don't like it at all
- why do red doors require 5 missiles to unlock?
- those one-way doors that require missiles, and even the ones that don't tbh
- I must have did the ridley fight wrong cuz it took foreverrrrr

My rankings; AM2R > Zero Mission = Fusion >> Super Metroid

I don't care if AM2R is a fan game. It's a perfect blend of the next 2 best ones, and it's damn fun

I would have probably liked it if I played SM first

For some reason I have a hard time getting into Super Metroid, even though I love the rest of the series. Zero Mission is one of my all-time faves, not to mention the Prime saga.

I actually never beat that game. I meant to, but I never could figure out how to get the strengthened bombs (the ones you deploy when you roll). I got the original bombs, but there was apparently a stronger version which I never got. I was always more of an RPG guy, though.

I see where you're coming from. Super Metroid set the standard for future 2D Metroid games to follow and it's been surpassed, IMO. I still hold it in high regard since it was one of the first Metroid games I played, but I think the best things it has going for it is its sense of atmosphere, music, and sprite detail. But in terms of gameplay and item balance it's a bit dated. I prefer tight jumps and controls rather than the floaty style it has.

Super Metroid is a good game.

Then you master the wall jump and shine spark and make the entire planet your bitch, and it becomes a great game

I never cared for the controls. It felt really clunky having to cycle through everything, especially after playing Fusion/Zero Mission where you only needed to hold a shoulder button to use missiles.

Biggest gripe however was the Save Room they put after a point-of-no-return in the final area. I was really looking forward to going around and seeing what I missed after beating the final boss, but nope.

The only knock I have against Super Metroid is that the movement feels clunky compared to Mega Man X, especially the wall jumping. But it's easy to forgive.

Super Metroid's art and sound are top-tier SNES. It's still far and away the best 2D Metroid. It isn't "standard Metroid stuff," it's literally the originator of the standard.

I can respect that opinion. Zero Mission is my go to 2D Metroid, surpasses Super in almost every way imo

I just wish Fusion was less linear, because I really love the gameplay and atmosphere of that one.

I'd say overall,

Prime 2 > Prime 1 > Zero Mission > Super >= Fusion > the rest

I love Super Metroid....until the Maridia part. I hate the water area. It takes me as long to get through Maridia as it does the whole game up to that point. I just struggle there for some reason. It's a shame because I like going back to Norfair and the final area.

I can forgive this honestly, and especially after watching Gawr Gura the Vtuber play and stumble through it and getting real frustrated.

I said this in another topic, but I feel Super Metroid came in at the tail end of the "fuck you, figure it out" era of gaming where the game (and the manual) not telling you stuff was considered part of the discovery and challenge. I'm quite certain, for example, that the only reason I knew how to get to Kraid's Lair from the Norfair elevator was because Nintendo Power told me.

I personally will always see it as a masterpiece and the pinnacle of the capabilities of the SNES, but I was in the right timeframe to appreciate that.

And when you get Fusion and Zero Mission with their much tighter and clearly defined controls, I personally felt a little like I was being treated with kid gloves, but accessibility is an important factor in games, and I can't not respect that.

The elevator from Brinstar to Norfair, where you have to Super Missile a rather unassuming wall so you can continue to go right through the wall dragon and enter Kraid's Lair.

I'd expect most players who were experienced with Metroid/Metroid 2 to try bombing that wall, which will reveal that it needs super missiles to break through. That's how I found it.
