Do people not realize how difficult and counterproductive that would be?

The hardware is specifically manufactured to recognize specific media. Consoles aren't inherently made to be altered in the same vein as PCs, and even stuff like Retron 5 is still made to read those specific consoles. You can mod a 3DS to have a Game Boy port, but it would still need portions of the Game Boy hardware, and it's not cheap or compact despite their age.

And on top of that, there's the cost of overhauling the hardware just to recognize discontinued media. They would probably produce the system at a loss because there's no current market for anything pre-PS4. Spending so much time and resources to recognize dead media would be a waste of time and money.

TC doesn't understand the concept of emulation, or that the PS5 is basically a regular PC that could easily emulate PS1 and PS2 games.

This actually looks better than the actual PS5, though, since it's at least symmetrical. Not that looking better than the PS5 is a high bar.

Id doesn't need 2 disc drives. Sony has perpetuated this lie for years that they couldn't fit "all that hardware" inside a box, but it's all emulated and of course they could do it.

It would need disc drives to actually play your physical playstation collection library. Isn't that the point?

I want to be able to play my old PS1-3 games without needing to dig out my respective console, especially when my PS2 and PS3 controllers are pretty much all broken and I would love to use a modern controller instead of trying to find a 20 year old 3rd party PS2 controller.

Also not a problem for me, but my dad bought a TV recently, and it doesn't have and RCA ports. So even if he wanted to dig out his PS1/2 and play his old games, he's literally unable to.

Also Xbox doesn't have the same problem (well not 100% but it does have way more BC than Playstation)

When I brought home the PS1 I was pissed it didn't have an RF adapter. We had one TV in the house that we could use for gaming that had an RCA hookup so we had to play it on that one until we got an RF Adapter.

It would need a disc drive. There's no reason it would need a seperate one from the one used for PS5 games / blu-rays - drives that can read all three types of disc (CD, DVD, Blu-ray) are not an unusual thing, I think most PC blu-ray drives can do all three.
