can you thermometer measure temperatures in the extremes or only human body temps? i mean can measure as low as 40 F and 120F?

We have one at work and we work on a mountain, we used to mess with it seeing how cold our skin was

I have one at work with a 500 degree oven. It can't read that high, but could read 200 degree water.
