If anything it only adds to the notion that cops shouldn't carry guns since they could easily be confused in the heat of panic.

Yea it's the literal dumbest defense I've heard in a case like this.

I'm fucking sorry, you are still responsible for all bullets you fire, even "on accident."

He would be. I mean, accidentally killing someone due to neglectful behavior is manslaughter I'm pretty sure.

"I didn't mean to rob that store, I thought it was my wallet when I pulled out my gun instead"

Like, if you are carrying a firearm, you know damn well where it is on your body. Complete bullshit defense.

It begs the question: should we really be tasing people for running away from police for minor warrants?

Why didn't the cop simply record the license plate and the driver's license number, report the guy to a judge, let the judge issue a bench warrant, and then let the city Marshall's go arrest the guy in 2 days?

I do see your point, but I also think that maybe just giving people a second to calm down and think rationally is all that is needed.

Really though, cops shouldn't be cops if they always need a moment to avoid murdering someone.

Replace the tazer with an extra gun to avoid confusion. Increase efficiency by avoiding mistakes.

I think literally blaming the individual cops in the majority of cases isn't quite the right thing here. Accountability is important, and the cop here should probably be charged with manslaughter, but that won't stop a similar instance from playing out tomorrow.

There's fundamentally an issue with how the system plays out, and it's gonna take a whole lot more than glibness to fix.

The issue is that cops see anyone not a cop as lesser and a threat, and black people (And anyone not white, quite often) as even worse in that regard. The issue is with the police, their training, their mentality, their boys club and that the justice system bends over thrice and then some to protect them when for anyone else who does a whiff of what they do is tossed into the criminal system and forgotten quicker than you can say "What a minute"

But I think we should 100% blame the cops that murder for the murdering. For the false accusations, for the roughing up and treating people worse than they need to. No one makes them do it, they choose to do so.
