Bought it on a whim based on the trailer.

I only compare it to Guacamelee because you unlock abilities to help you progress like a Metroidvania but Narita Boy is waaaaay more linear. Like, there's a little bit of exploration and light puzzle-solving but the game is mostly a straight line to the finish. Which is fine by me.

Another Guacamelee comparison I could make is that enemy encounters occur in small arenas, and later in the game you need to color-coordinate your attacks based on the enemy color sorta like how you had to break certain color shields on enemies in Guacamelee. I remember in Guacamelee some of the harder encounters were some of the trickier gauntlet arena rooms where they'd throw a lot at you at once. Some of those were harder than the bosses imho, and you get a little of that in Narita Boy.

Game has very stylish art design with lots of Easter eggs. Soundtrack is bangin'. Story is good, too. Pretty standard hack-n-slash combat, but you acquire a limited skillset that changes things up a bit, and certain enemies require you to keep on your toes and adapt on the fly to maintain your edge in the fight. It's not a deep combat system by any stretch, but it does enough to keep things fresh over the short length of the game (I probably beat it in about 8 hours, maybe less, and I wasn't rushing at all).

Just want to put this on ya'lls radar if you're looking for something new to play. If I hadn't watched the trailer for this I would've never known about it probably. Never heard of this game before seeing the trailer but it was a pretty solid game.

Oh one thing that annoyed me - about halfway through the game you unlock a dash attack, and I could never get it to work properly. I'm willing to accept that maybe I just wasn't doing it properly but my gut is telling me it was poorly implemented and other people will have similar issues.

It wouldn't be so bad if you could ignore it and use other attacks but there are enemies with which you have to use the dash attack on to open them up for subsequent attacks. And like I said these encounters are like mini arenas. You can't progress until you clear them.

Minor annoyance that dash attack but didn't kill my overall enjoyment of the game
