This basically. I would spend like 1 hour or more in the store, just picking up game cases and reading the back to see if it sounded interesting lol.

You can't even read the back of the box in half the places you can buy games.

I'm sorry, but 10,000 of ANYTHING on a PS2 would absolutely destroy your framerate. It'd be like playing chess through the mail. ~johnboy1

Yeah, it's been a long time since they mattered to me, but they did help with my decision making as a kid.

I picked out EarthBound for my parents to buy for me specifically because I was jealous that my brother picked out Mario paint which had a giant box

Look at the little millennial.

Back in the days before the internet, gaming magazines and video game TV series that is all you had to go on.

I remember the days back in the 1980's when the back of the box or an advert in a newspaper or tv was all you had to go on in deciding whether or not a game was worth buying or not.

I get that it was a thing before the internet. I'm asking if it's still a thing because otherwise why would they have anything on the back?

...at the rental store.

Then you go buy the game, if it's any good or you couldn't beat it over the weekend.

The last game I bought based on this was probably Mystic Heroes on Gamecube.

Kinda regretted it.

Yeah. Box art and description made it sound like a proper Mario World sequel.

I was 7 or 8 and I still enjoyed it but it was not what I was expecting.
