Current Events > Civilization 6 feels too... small scale?

I dunno how to explain it, I'm pretty new to the series, started with 5.

I picked Huge Map, 8 players (less than the recommended, for more space) and am doing my first round. So far, so good. I've expanded to three cities in the first age and am preparing to secure both chokepoints I found. Then it occurred to me... are all 7 AI on the black circle in the mini-map? Which is, by my best guess, equal or slightly larger landmass than my 40% mapped out space?

It feels like I can just march over there with a small beginner army and find all of them shoulder to shoulder. Either this is the dumbest seed ever, or Civ 6 maps are a lot smaller than I remember 5 being.

I found it hard to get into 6 after 5. I hope it works out for you, because I think others like it more than 5. I was just too dumb to figure out the new stuff

I'm not sold on districts, and climate change feels dumb in action. And there's quite a lot of other unusual things I've noticed but I'm going to give it a fair shake. A full ass, long match or two with my favorite settings and I'll give it a fair shake despite bad first impressions.
