Because racists were so upset about having a black President that they made a cult following around someone who spent 8 years spreading racist conspiracy theories about him. The rhetoric I remember from that time was democrats asking if people now thought America wasn't a racist country just because they had a black president. And I think that for the majority of Americans the answer to that was yes. They didn't care what race the president was. The exception was the racists that only voted for him because of his skin color.
