As a kid, my mom bought me a Sega Genesis and was going to get me Sonic 2 for my birthday, but got Sonic Spinball by accident (it would be another year before she bought me another Sonic game). As a result, I have a lot of nostalgia for that game being the only one I played for a while. I beat it multiple times.

Looking back at it now, I'm curious if the game was generally well-liked, mid-tier, or a universally hated Sonic game. I feel like on a replay the game might not hold up well.

It's meh. Biggest issues for me is whatever caused the animations to look janky as fuck (low FPS or intentional, Idunno) and Sonic's floatiness. Like the concept as a spinoff is good, but as I recall from the perusing I've done on the game, it was a quick attempt to get out a Sonic game for the holidays or something, and it shows.

i think its a really interesting part of sonic history

the game was super rushed because sonic 3 wasn't coming out anytime soon, took about 2 months of development before it was finished. they only had 2 hours to come up with a theme song, and not a single sprite, graphic or artwork was taken from the other sonic games, and only the american crew worked on the game.

its mediocre, but thought it was okay. definitely the worst of the classic sonic games, but i have an appreciation for it. i plan on covering this game on my gaming youtube channel.

I'm not sure how many people would enjoy the game now. It was decent at the time, but it is a game that needs nostalgia goggles to enjoy today for most.

The game was okay to play back then. But it was really hard and I always got stuck on the 3rd level. And there are...4 levels? 5?

It manages to be both a bad Sonic game and a bad pinball game at the same time.

I wanna see what it would be like optimized. Like, 60 FPS, proper physics, etc.

Fun little game. I also liked Sonic Labyrinth (but not 3D blast).

It's not great tbh. If not for nostalgia I would probably full-on dislike it.

It's one of the three games I had for the Sega Genesis. It was easily the worst of the three.

Yeah pretty much the same thing as most people here.

Was obsessed with Sonic as a kid, Sonic was my favorite EVERYTHING.

Sonic Spinball though? I HATED that game. I don't remember much about it but I remember that first level just being an absolute maze. I rented game for one weekend, never got past the first level, super frustrated.

Rented it again a month later, same thing. Never rented again.

Been too long since I played it, but I remember it being fun, if slow for a pinball game.

I played it potentially when I was a bit older than some people in this topic. I got all the way to the final boss and never found the first two levels to be very difficult.

That being said, I can't imagine what this was like for someone in the 7-10 range. Ooof

Yeah, I remember rage quitting multiple times. But being that it was the only game I had on the system for a year, I had no other options than to just git good. The first time beating the final boss 4 levels in was amazing. Seeing all the explosions when you tear down his whole space station after what you went through to get there was very satisfying.
