i grew up in a place where middle names weren't first names

im just saying that yeah semantics means her name is "melanie newton", but she instead goes by her middle name and surname. This is just changing things so that people spell her name correctly.

Because people in the US and (some) other English speaking countries refer to real name as your given first name only, thus youd say go by middle name.

Real name would be an idiom to represent the first part of your full name.

You seem to be stuck on real name in the sense of anything can technically be a name is not the same thing as what is being said here, which is why words are fluid and you have to understand the context.

Then I don't believe you grew up in the US, spoke English as your first language, or have been out of the US for so long that you've lost general conventions here.

If you go ask 100 people in the U.S. that grew up here (not some other culture with different naming conventions), I'd bet my life that 90+ of them would say the same thing if you asked them to specify. 100% of them would understand what you mean (unless speaking to someone behind the curve) if they said a nickname/middle name that didn't sound like a typical first name and you asked, "Is that your real name?" They'd be like, "Well, it's not my given/birth/legal name but I've always gone by that." Nobody irl argues shit like, "No, middle names can be real names too!" It's just dumb and childish arguing or purposely acting dense.

thats what people mean when they say "real name". its not suggesting douglas isn't part of his name or anything like that, its that people naturally associate first and last name as "real name" (or all together, but never middle and last alone). some people don't have middle names too because its not culturally normal and so first and last name will always be the default "real name"

the main point is that everyone knows a middle name is part of your full legal name and so pointing that out doesnt change anything, everyone knows that. Its just that it might be a cultural thing for different countries where real name is automatically assumed to be first and last name and not the person's middle and surname alone
