From Monday to Thursday, they work 9 hours. On Friday, they worked 4.

Should they be paid 40 regular hours or 36 regular hours+4 OT hours?

I'd be looking at what their employment contract says, as to whether overtime is calculated based on the daily hours or weekly.

California IIRC actually does do it by day, over 8 hrs:

1. One and one-half times the employee's regular rate of pay for all hours worked in excess of eight hours up to and including 12 hours in any workday, and for the first eight hours worked on the seventh consecutive day of work in a workweek; and

No everywhere. At Amazon you work 4, 10 hour days a week and only get OT if you work an extra day or anything over 10 hours.

Wasn't friday a holiday. Where I live you get paid time and half if you work a holiday.
Plus you get holiday pay added to pay cheque which is calculated based on previous 4 week average.

that might me an Amazon policy. Its not a federal or an every state policy. My state, it didnt matter this many hours in a day worked , you didnt hit OT until you did more than 40 in a week.
