I don't know if it was the first ever to creep me out but one I particularly remember is the X-Files movie. My dad was a huge fan of the show and for some reason dragged me to the theater with him to watch it when I was like 8. The show itself and the theme song already had creeped me out at home.

Anyway the plot involved these aliens (looked like stereotypical "grey" aliens which at the time, also creeped me out) with super sharp claws who just mauled people, and this black ink which could get inside people and spawn an alien within them that would burst out. (not sure if this is an overall spoiler for the X-Files series as I never got into it, spoilered just in case). I don't think I could sleep for like two days and my mom got so pissed at my dad, lol.

I wasn't technically a little kid but I also remember the American The Grudge remake actually creeping me out a ton when I was already in high school.

Love horror these days.

Alien was the first horror movie watched. Didn't bother me. Thought it was cool sci fi. However prophecy,(1979). Was the first to creep me out.

I used to watch so many horror movies as a kid, so I'm not sure if I can remember the first movie to really scare me as they all did lol. Here are some movies that had me sleeping with the lights on though:

  • Nightmare on Elm Street - Robert Englund's portrayal of Freddy was terrifying and the entire concept of being killed in your dreams was both clever and scary.
  • The Exorcist - the scene in which the young girl crab walks down the stairs scared me for weeks. I couldn't walk by the staircase at night without being scared I would see her lol.
  • Scream - The brutal kills and violence portrayed in this movie frightened me badly. Now it's become one of my favourite horror movies ever.
  • Poltergeist - I can't believe this movie was only rated PG because it had some truly frightening scenes. The idea that the family never really "beat" the poltergeist, but rather, was forced to flee from their house was such a scary ending.

Oh I was scared of a lot of films as a kid. JAWS and Arachnophobia gave me nightmares. Particularly since I'm aracnophobic.

I vaguely remember a movie with some tall creature folding up this guy in its bat wings and leaving bones and goop when it was done. Dunno if that was one exactly.

Children of the Corn. My dad let me watch it when I was like 5 and we lived right next to corn fields

I wouldn't have slept for years.

I watched Children of the Corn at 10 or 11 and it still gave me nightmares for a week then, living in a rural area.

Not really a horror movie, but Return to Oz gave me nightmares as a kid. The scene where Dorothy steals the Powder of Life is still the scariest scene in a Disney movie.

I also watched Child's Play when I was 7. I was so scared shitless that I was afraid that my toys were plotting to kill me. Quite a step up from Toy Story, if I do say so myself.

My aunt was super into horror films so I ended up watching stuff I shouldn't have when I was really young. Scream was definitely one that stuck with me for a long time just because it wasn't sci-fi or supernatural.

Oh yeah I didn't watch it but seeing a picture of Pinhead from Hellraiser made me (age 5) have frequent nightmares about my family turning into him. The worst thing was they'd stick out their tongues and it'd be all white and covered in pins.

Until now I still cant sleep with my limbs out. Not out of fear. Im just conditioned to sleep that way.

Return to Oz scared the crap out of all of us as kids. I don't care what anyone says. Its got electro-shock therapy, an asylum, a queen who steals people's living heads and wears them like hats, a creepy ass claymation monster that tries to eat people, and a desert that insta-kills you. If those ain't horror elements, I dunno what is?

My parents were watching some horror movie and I walked into a scene where a guy stares into a bathroom mirror as he rips the flesh off his face. Was that poltergeist or the exorcist?

Also Sixth Sense messed me up a bit. I think theres a scene where the kid sees some ghosts hanging from nooses in a stairwell? I was afraid of turning the corner going upstairs in my house for a good few years after that hahaha

actually that one was part of a one-two combo, because I had seen some real ghost stories special on TV where a familys house had a hallway from hell where they had found their pet cat murdered and strung up on a wall. We had a pet cat at the time and the stock image in the special sort of resembled our upstairs hallway, ;;>_____>

its funny. Our hall was painted white but Ill often remember it with a red tint thanks to that tv special

You wanna know what the real fucked up thing is? In high school, we had a discussion in my sophomore year English class about the creepy origins of famous fairy tales, which led to us talking about movies that traumatized us. I had mentioned this movie and after watching the Powder of Life scene, the other kids bullied me for being scared of the movie. I don't care what anyone says, Return to Oz should be reclassified as a horror movie.
