Honestly even when watching it I felt it took a big step down about halfway through when the mystery future timeline they were building towards was ~~Barney and Robin's wedding~~. The first few seasons had something it was building towards. Then the next 4 seasons it was building towards that wedding. It's when I felt it started to miss a step.
