And no this isn't an April Fools joke.

I was given a N12 form which means "Notice to end your tenancy because the landlord, a purchaser or a family member requires the rental unit"

The place I've been renting has been sold and I'm getting the boot.

I've got until May 31.

I never had a lease. I just gave the landlord first and last when I moved in, that's it.

Damn bro that sucks. I was gonna say if you had a lease they shouldn't be able to break that and let someone else move in even if they are selling it.

Thanks. It sucks because rent is getting super expensive here. I've been paying $900 a month for a 1 bedroom basement apartment, and apparently that's a really good deal.

It's unlikely I'll be able to find a place anywhere near that price.

Oh shit. Sorry to hear that man. Happened to the girl who lived in the unit next to me because the previous landlady sold the property to a relatove and he wanted to move in and her apt was bigger and nicer than mine so he decided to move it (upstairs is 2 br unit and other relatives of both of them lived there at the time).

He's gonna be expanding on the property this year and possibly moving so I'm hoping this doesn't happen to me, but the way he was talking about doing renovations, it sounded like I'm okay, but I'm not so quick to trust that. I am hopeful that everything will be fine since I've been here almost 8 years, always pay rent on time and get along with the landlord, and I've chill with him since before he even bought the place since I knew him through the former upstairs relatives of his.

Still, that sucks. It's good you have that much time though. 2 months seems pretty generous to me. My neighbor only had 1 month and I think that was pretty generous in the US, especially considering this property is month to month (but I don't know laws for this sort of thing). In any case, good luck. I hope you find a new place without too much hassle or stress.

Man i'm sorry to hear it, in case you need it, is that offer still on the table for you to take on more hours that you mentioned last year? Also, are there no current eviction restrictions because of COVID? I guess it wouldn't matter if there's no lease, I hate it for you man. Hopefully you can figure it out between now and then and it's a smooth transition.

Just to give you an idea of how much rent has increased in the past 10 years.

Back in 2011/2012 a buddy and I were renting a 2 bedroom apartment in a 2 story apartment building for $850 a month + utilities.

There's a 1 bedroom apartment in that building listed online for $1350 + utilities.

Jeez. I've been living in the same place since summer 2013 and my rent hasn't gone up since. Granted I'm not in a big city but it's not rural either... kinda like yuppie hippie college area. I feel very fortunate but I would hate to have to move right now.

I'm in a smaller town but it's just outside of Toronto. The real estate market here is getting crazy.

I know a guy who bought a house here 15 years ago for $275,000.

He sold it recently for $975,000

$125,000 above what it was originally listed at.

That's crazy. I live in a mid-sized city and prior to buying a house I lived in 4 different rentals. Every one of them once I renewed my yearly lease, increased by $50 a month.

What does it cost to rent a house? In the US, a crappy house in a semi-safe neighborhood is like $1600/month on the lower side. Single college kid apartment is like $1000-1200 before utilities and renters insurance. Its literally becoming unfeasible and our government thinks we are all paying $700/year because theyre stuck in the 1960s.

I dunno. I'm not even looking at houses because I know I can't afford it. I'd much rather have a shitty little apartment by myself then rent a house with roommates.

@a-c-a-b Have any interest in buying a place? So my wife and I were in a similar situation to you a couple years back. We were trying to save enough money for a down payment and had about one year left. Then the owner of our rental decided to sell it. Since we couldn't find anywhere that would take all of our dogs, we looked into buying a house.

Turned out our credit scores were so good that we didn't need the 10-20% down payment. We were able to qualify for a 0% down payment loan. From the time we found a house to when they dropped the keys in my hand, we ended up only pay $3.5k. That was the cost of home inspection and legal fees.

I'll never be in a position to ever buy a place where I live. Not even remotely close.

Wasn't sure where in CA you were but this makes sense. I often hear about Toronto area housing explosions.

And I hear ya about prefering a tiny solo apt over a house w/ roommates. Last time I was in that situation, I actually called in to work (like called work and was like "can I please come in to work today even though I have it off?" because a roommate was drunk and got into a fight with his buddy and broke a glass table and was bleeding everywhere. He was a good friend of mine too, not just some random that the landlord found and threw into the lease. It got dark later when I got home. He wanted me to help him do something bad because he "was to afraid to do it himself" and I was like "wtf no..." I stayed up until like 10 am to make sure he was okay. Fucking Chantix is no joke...

They can do that? I assume thats when someone in your house breaks the lease and you have to find someone to live there and pay rent, but dont know anyone? If I was paying my own rent and my landlord told me someone else was moving in, it would be a violation of our contract. Ive never even heard of that happening before. (Or is this in Canada only?)
