DM has their special little story in mind and takes deviations as a personal insult. The party always just meets like a bunch of Grindr hookups in a tavern, without anyone caring or putting effort into why these specific people would be in this actual tavern and why they'd give a shit about the particular dragon or whatever. Everyone wants to metagame and rules lawyer instead of just pretending to be a damn tree or whatever. No one ever does anything in-character or does voices, just normal "Yeah, so Vanai rolls to attack. And, uh, hey, John, does your warrior Ethriot have any moves that could help me next turn?" Two different beasts but I've definitely gotten that same euphoric experience from both online and in person. I think if you're looking to get into D&D for your first time, or start back up, it is a fantastic time to do both. 5e is fun. It doesn't take long to get a character up and running.
