I'm on season 3. The last arc was fantastic but im not sure how they can recover from the fallout. Hotch is good but he's very much a second-in-command and team whip. I dunno how they're gonna replace what Gideon gave the show. I guess it does go on for 12 more seasons though

Why was the Gideon character removed from the show to begin with?

Apparently the content of the show disturbed the actor just as much as it did his character. I understand it, there's some very distressing material shown. If any show warrants a content warning it may be Criminal Minds.

The actor left because he felt the show was too dark / negative and was taking a psychological toll on him. Dont know if its true or not but I heard at the time that he has a habit of leaving projects suddenly, so maybe that was just his excuse for not wanting to work after making a bit of money to carry him a few years.

He didn't want to do it any more. He basically said that it was a mistake to think that he could be okay with doing a job that involved pretending to deal with rape and murder and horrible abuse all the time.

Did you hear about the class action lawsuit against the production team and studios because of sexual harassment on set? Apparently it was so widespread that the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing decided to include every crew member within the class to be compensated (if theres a guilty verdict - I dont think the trial has started yet) because pretty much everyone was victimized to some extent. You wouldnt think shit like that would be happening on set of a show about catching criminals, but between that and a few lead actors coming and going and the guy who plays Hotch getting fired for assaulting someone on set twice, it sounds like it was pretty crazy.

Wheels up in 30

Seriously though, this surprises me. It's a network show. Seems weird that Patinkin had that much of an issue with the content but was fine with Homeland... like that show had terrorist plots and fake news alex jones characters and treason and stuff. Early seasons Criminal Minds was tame as fuck compared to that. Still, I agree. His acting was good. Joe Montagne was a good replacement and I like his character a lot, but still... I had assumed Patinkin left to pursue his role in Homeland but I guess I was wrong there.

Holy shit that is nuts. One of the main characters (Morgan? I think his name is) being a child rape survivor makes that even more fucked up.

Yeah, I was really big into it for a while during the early seasons. But then that episode where the three girls are trapped in some guys basement broke me. I just have no desire to subject myself to that stuff.

My wife and I are doing a rewatch together. She watched the first 10 seasons by herself a long time ago, and I've watched all of it by myself. Gideon is probably the best actor they have on the show at any given time. Reed is my second favorite. I'd have probably have lost interest in the show if it wasn't for him.

How the hell?

"Takes a toll?"

It's a fucking show, people. Purely entertainment. It'd be another thing if the actors went to the actual scenes of tragic crimes on the daily, and not to some studio set filled with props. How difficult is to separate what's real, and what's scripted for an episode? Jesus Christ.

I've never liked Criminal Minds because of how dark it was. It's just not an enjoyable watch.

I flipped to an episode the other day to give it a chance, and of course it ended with a guy having murdered his entire family and some other people with a shotgun. I don't really know why anyone would want to watch this.

And what's more disturbing as the evil villain actually getting away? Which rarely happens, but sometimes it just does, like...

In the episode where a family abducts children over generations in order for the children to finally take on the role of the parents in the end and therefore abduct the next generation and so on. Well, whereas the BAU does take out that family, however, in the ending scene we learn that there exist countless of these families...

Which will be addressed never again...

One of the episodes I watched last night had the killer get away. It was the one where a guy in the woods was kidnapping and doing horrible things to boys. He was able to sneak away at the end while they did catch a different child predator

Was it really that much worse than a normal crime procedural? My roommate in college had it on regularly in the background and I would tune in and out, but none of it seemed any better or worse than like CSI or Bones or whatever the hell other dozen informative murder porn shows there are.

Criminal Minds is the darkest police procedural out there. Like, only Law and Order SVU can match it in terms of depressing content, but the frank silliness of everything about the characters and plotting makes SVU easier to watch.
