I love a bunch of FF games and the only one I've never played is 13. I've played 4 DQ games I think and liked them all but the story ain't ever great, but I love the gameplay. DQ is the only series I like grinding in

But my vote goes to FF over all

FF actually has memorable stories/characters, but they are hit or miss on actual fun.

Gonna hand FF the edge since my fav FF games blow every DQ game I've played out of the water in terms of my enjoyment.

Dragon Quest found a winning formula and stuck with it and only enhanced it through the years. FF got way too experimental and is barely even an RPG series anymore.

I'm more interested in playing the Dragon Quests I haven't played than the Final Fantasies I haven't played. Dragon Quest 3 and 5 are better than the best Final Fantasy games. Final Fantasy Tactics is the best spinoff series, but the Torneko mystery dungeon series is better than the Chocobo mystery dungeon series -- and the Dragon Quest Monsters games aren't too far behind the Final Fantasy Tactics games.
Both Dragon Quest of the Stars and Dragon Quest Tact are way better than Brave Exvius, Record Keeper, or War of the Visions.

Dragon Quest seems way more consistent, and Final Fantasy has had consistently bad looking games since the PSX era -- while Dragon Quest keeps upping the ante.

I like DQs worlds and konsistancy better, but FF wins with stories, characters, n music.

My first rpg was the first Dragon Quest. Been a fan of the series ever since.

Final Fantasy I didn't really get interested in until V.

So my vote goes to DQ.

Sounds like your friends are morons, and you should make up your own mind instead of listening to others. Everyone is going to have a different opinion on what games are good and what games are horrible. My buddy loves Final Fantasy 8 while I think it was great up until about the halfway mark, 9 is arguably one of the best games in the entire series, and 10 actually is amazing. People just bitch about it because of 1 particular scene which was meant to be cringy in the first place. 11 wasn't bad, 12 is horrible/great depending on who you ask(I'm personally not a fan as I think the story is garbage, but I will admit it has arguably one of the best worlds in the entire series).

And Dragon Quest 8 is an awesome game, imo far better than Dragon Quest 11.

your friends sound like they have some pretty spicy takes...

I mean X is divisive with some of its characters and cutscene direction... but it has one of the more touching stories in the series.

IX is slower paced but does characters (at least the main ones) and story really well.

DQ VIII is commonly mentioned as one peoples favorites from that series. I dont think its that much of a stretch to say a lot of people got into Dragon Quest because of it.

I heard from some on the DQ board that it's essentially the FIFA games of Japan.

Anyways the only DQ game I ever played was 11 and was not impressed with it at all. It was some of the most boring RPG's I played in a long time because it had almost nothing going for it. The characters were drab and boring and the story is typical shit you see in RPG's. The combat is fun only in hard difficulty, but it's not engaging enough in my opinion. It is a really beautiful looking game though and I'll give it to the voice actors for doing a decent job at times. If the other DQ games are like 11, I just can't give a point to it because there are FF games that are 10 times better than it... even though it does have really shitty games like 13.

FF tells more unique stories on average but the quality is all over the place.

Which is a good thing. As I said, they found something that works so why change it too much? Square could've learned that lesson with Final Fantasy and maybe we wouldn't have the shitty titles we have like XIII. Change just for the sake of change is never good.

Gotta go with FF the SNES trio are some of my favourite games ever.

That said I also adore Dragon Warrior 3, fucking around with a party of goof offs is hilarious.
