I actually hated Crash 4, the devs listened to the vocal minority for some reason and just made it as hard as god damn possible. I got frustrated and quit pretty early on when I saw that fun clearly wasn't the focus. I don't mind a challenge but yikes.

This worries me. I want a fun little platformer, don't really have anything to prove with difficulty.

yea they really took all the fun out of collecting things by putting too much emphasis on it. Half the fun in the Trilogy was figuring out how to get to different paths to collect all the boxes and stuff. In this game its just like "here is a box that is super hard to get, go get it" or "there is a box just off screen here that you're going to miss"

Yeah, even though part of the appeal with Crash is completing everything, they really went overboard with 4, lol. Crash 4's a more enjoyable experience if you play it casually and don't bother getting literally everything. Just get as much as you're comfortable with (maybe at least the Flashback Tapes since you're getting story + new levels with those).

one thing i never quite understood tho: do i really need to get all of the gems in a single run when playing a level or can i come back to it just for the gems i missed?

and yeah, this game feels like Toys For Bob looked at that Stormy Ascent level from Crash Bandicoot 1 and went "lets do more of this but HARDER!!" lol

If you're playing crash after the one that had the foggy bridge stage with random falling planks, you're a masochist and you simply have refused to admit it

You dont have to get all of them in 1 run. Perfectionist relic is basically that, though. 0 deaths and all boxes is basically guaranteed 5 gems (not counting the hidden one, which can be off the beaten path completely).

Crash 2 and 3 are noticeably easier than Crash 1.
