First off, let me get this out of the way - the actual gameplay is fun as hell. It doesnt feel like theres any filler levels so far, and the new mechanics (Quantum Masks, other playable characters) have been fun to use. I just hit the ice world.

Anyways, the actual completionist aspect of the game is just incredibly stupid hard. Dont get me wrong, I like a challenge. But man, this game demands you play perfectly to get that 100%.

  • Colored gems. The game doesnt tell you which levels these are in: Red and Green gems have no rhyme or reason to finding them. You just have to get lucky or look them up. Blue has a hint but it also just turns into a ridiculously hard challenge (it pays homage to the Crash 2 blue gem where you dont collect any boxes, but they had the courtesy to put that in the easy 1st level): Yellow gem is a joke. Somehow the last colored gem is the one thats the easiest to pick up because you can kinda see it floating in the air over some boxes you have to really go out of your way to get.
  • The boxes. Remember Cold Hard Crash from Crash 2? Every level in this game is that level on steroids. Part of that is how long every level is (which is much appreciated, I can always go for more content), but they also go out of their way to hide tons of boxes. Basically demanding you to follow a guide so you dont miss any in these marathon levels.
  • N-Verted levels: In some cases you will he be able playing the same level 4 times to earn all of the gems from them (this includes the alt versions where you play as another character and then resume the level partway thru the Crash/Coco part). Fuck you devs, I dont want grind out levels like that.
  • Perfect Relic: Rewarded for breaking all boxes without losing a life. Im not hitting 106%. The load times alone for restarting a level makes me not want to do it.
Also theres quite a few annoying bugs Id run into that youd think wouldve been patched out by the time the Switch version came around. Ive hit invisible walls that got me killed. There was a certain checkpoint where if I had walked backwards I would get it instantly killed by some invisible thing.

I never complete games 100% as it just seems like too much work. I tend to quit a game once I finish the main story.

With that being said, reading your post gave me anxiety lol.

I haven't even finished the game yet, much less even tried going for completionist runs. Every few weeks I boot it up to continue and immediately lose my desire to keep playing due to the sadistic beat down the game delivers on me, and end up only doing a level or two.

awful, awful game

I recently played the trilogy remake, good times. 1 was hardest, 2 hard but slightly easier than 1, 3 the easiest of all.

Is 4 harder than even 1? And will I like it? I like the original trilogy. I either didn't play or don't remember the ps2 ones

4 is harder than most games made since the SNES generation, IMO.

Like, people say Dark Souls is hard? This is way harder than that. Ikaruga is easier than Crash 4.

i think the difficulty is fine, it's just that the levels really start dragging on and become messes. check out the last level on youtube or something and see how it devolves into just floating up and down through the air and a bunch of lasers

Oh no, a thing is bad from a completely nonsensical and voluntary habit.

It's called stop playing the game when you're satisfied and want to move on. Playing a game until you've done literally every damn thing a game has to offer is nothing more than an arduous grind that'll beat the enjoyment out of you.

Completionists are by far the oddest subgroup of gamers to me.

and its not like youre missing anything (like a secret final level) by not going for 100%

Wrath of Cortex was Travelers Tales going through the motions, and the loading times were even worse than they are in this game.

This game actually has effort put into it, and new, interesting mechanics. Its just that some of the effort was spent expanding out into some of the wrong areas.

I found absolutely nothing arduous about 100% completing Guacamelee, Mark of the Ninja, the Spyro trilogy (PS1 and remake), and God of War 4. Those games are absolutely delightful even while going for 100% completion. An actually good game should make you want to 100% complete it because it's actually fun enough to do so.

Ive never understood the argument of who cares if extra content for 100% is shitty or arbitrarily difficult? Its optional, just dont do it. Like, yeah, no crap, but its still content sold to you in the game and as such not above criticism. Some people like seeing everything a game has to see, to feel like theyve really done it all. When done it all gets really stupid, of course you can just not do it, but thats still a bummer because you clearly are hoping theres more FUN to be had beyond the credits rolling or you wouldnt still be playing. Bloodborne is an almost perfect game to 100%/plat because its extra content doesnt devolve into drivel. Dark Souls games are noticeably worse to 100% because of covenant stuff and the only one Ive done it for is the first.

Just speaking generally, I have not played 4 yet. I did 100% the N-Sane Trilogy a couple years back, including all platinum relics. That had a few levels that were absolutely bullshit but the majority were fun enough to master that it kept me hooked in.

Wrath of Cortex is Crash 4 as far as I'm concerned.

But yes, the vehicles were a drag, especially, and I mean FUCKING especially Hot Coco, where it drops her on the jetski with no path and just says "fuck you, figure out where the crates are yourself and get platinum while you do it, shithead"

crash 3's swimming levels blew, too

Ass Creed killed the completionist in me

I used to 100% games and I 100% Ass Creed 2, Rev, Brotherhood and 3

And then was like "Wtf am I doing with my life? No one cares, it's not fun"

Now I just don't give a shit

Only exception is sometimes when I realize I only have like 3 or 4 achievements left to platinum a game I go do them

I have 2 left in Valhalla that I don't want to try, 1 for some stupid shit where you have to kill 3 certain particular enemy types while YOU are on fire (?????) and then the one for catching every fish of every size variety, for that which the devs can eat my entire ass, that's the tedious, arbitrary anti-fun stuff I'm talking about.

Oh yeah let's inject half-baked fishing that's currently broken and glitched btw into Assassin's Creed for god's sake and then require the player to fritter hours of his life away doing it. It's psychological torture and it blows my mind

yeah give me the GBA games, Twinsanity, Nitro Kart, Bash, hell even parts of WoC... perhaps less well designed and polished on an objective level but still dont go out of their way to spite the player the way 4 does, I have fun with them

I also definitely get what others were saying about at least half of the levels not feeling very Crash-y thematically. The beginning and end of the game for sure, the pirate levels as well but the rest? Eh.
