It's a topic that garners a lot of single issue voters, many of which are in the Bible Belt. This gives repubs a strangle hold on that area. Because of this, it's played up in order to keep that power. So then they're spoonfed a bunch of bias confirmation to whip themselves into a frenzy. It's actually a very transparent strategy, but the audience doesn't seem to care.

On another note as religion seemingly dies off in America, republicans will need to make a decision between keeping with their values and winning. Im pretty sure I know what choice they'll make but a lot of single issue voters will probably be very surprised.

I know a woman who had two regrets it deeply. She said to me, "my second abortion was probably the last time I had a chance having someone really love me." Totally dead inside. Much like its heartless dudes on this topic that try to compare it to capital punishment. Really shows how fucked in the head they are.

the thing about populism is that it relies on feeling/emotional response and not thought/rational response

like a person considering their views on abortion might consider that a woman who has an abortion probably is incredibly broken up over it and likely only made the choice to abort because she was out of alternatives. and thinking rationally, might conclude that a moral choice of such severe magnitude ought to be left to the person who deals with the consequences of that choice for the rest of their life (one way or the other)

but it's much easier and faster to emote (not to be confused with think) "those sluts don't care at all! I have to make this decision for them!" and if you're a relatively unsuccessful person struggling to stay afloat yourself, bombarded with propaganda that reinforces this irrational emotional response, you might never stop to think about abortion.

i know some conservatives yes, but i only maintain contact with intelligent ones who think about their politics. this is the privilege of education and affluence- nobody in my circle is struggling so hard to stay afloat that they can't spend time thinking about their views or evaluating them.

most of them are pro-life only in their personal leanings, and (for the reasons i mention above) not in favor of policy that restricts access. many of them do prefer policy that pushes women to evaluate alternative options, though not the psychological torture stuff like "listen to its heartbeat!" that has been passing in the most conservative states.

the reality is that pro-life leaning in national policy is a result of placing feels over reals.

Also, I'm trapped in Arizona, and in high school, for the human health class or whatever, where we learned about the human body, when it came time to learn about reproduction stuff, the topic of abortion came up, and the teacher said that in some cases, if a mother wanted an abortion, but was too late to get it, then after the baby is born, the doctor will just drop the baby in a wastebucket.

This, but also the big focus is on things like abortion, because the fetus isn't going to actually ask them to do anything. They can't ask for healthcare or social services, so they're a prime option to target, and they can forget about them once a child is born and will actually need government assistance.

The whole topic is just a blanket excuse to not give a **** about people they are supposed to care about.

You cannot call yourself pro-life while guaranteeing that child that you've demanded a mother carry to term has no certainty offood, shelter, or healthcare after it is born. You cannot claim the title of pro-life if you strip away the chances of the baby you demand be born to actually live past the point of it's birth. You are pro-birth, which is absolutely about controlling the reproductive choices of women. Especially when you actively work to remove access to birth control which would prevent the very abortions these people claim to abhor. Fuck them and fuck you for going to bat for them.
