I think I was a bit too immature as a gamer to enjoy Fallout 3. I got confused early on and then just traded it in.

Should I even play Fallout 3 in 2021? Or just go into New Vegas? 4?

Just try 3 again. I don't know what you didn't like but they're all similar at their core.

Fallout 4, probably. It's just a generic shooter. New Vegas, I doubt, based on your past interests.

I'd give it another go as an adult. Still don't like it then maybe the franchise isn't for you

I believe I felt overwhelmed and did not know where to go or what to do or what the next objective was.

Maybe I should try the outer worlds? I've heard that is more linear.

It's not to say I don't like open world games. I do. But maybe I need some more direction!

Can you elaborate on that? Are there no side quests?

Fallout 4 has sidequests, but it eliminates most mechanics resembling RPG mechanics. Gimps your progression and roleplay immensely, railroads you into a specific story, lots of gun fighting. I'm not going to say it's bad but it's about the opposite what I'm looking for in a Fallout game

Fallout New Vegas is a masterpiece almost entirely across the board, and a top 3 RPG of all time IMO. Top 2 prob

Sounds like New Vegas would be up your alley, actually. For the first act of the game you're given some pretty strong direction as to the path the game wants you to take; you are more than free to stray from the path or beeline straight to the eponymous Vegas if you want, but you will more than likely get your ass kicked by high-level enemies. Once the plot starts to diverge and offer you faction choices in the 2nd act, you'll likely be acclimatized to the world enough that it won't overwhelm you anymore.

As for side quests, NV handles this pretty well too, as the game does an admirable job of linking things together. Settlements are in fairly logical places along highways and supply routes, and a fair amount of small quests that seem like pointless busywork at first glance are designed to introduce you to NPCs who offer meatier quests, should you not have already encountered them by exploring on your own.

Probably not. I think 3 was the weaker title of all those but I liked it alot when I played it back in the day

It's just more straightforward. Go to location kill all enemies. That's basically every question. There's a few that require you to get items, but that involves killing all/most of the enemies anyway. Fallout 4 may not be as in-depth as the rest of the series, but it's still a good game.

Outer Worlds is good if you are looking for a different flavor. It's a much more colorful game, which is very welcome in my eyes. Fallout is a much larger experience than OW so don't go in with unrealistically large expectations. I liked it.

New Vegas is way better than FO3, if you ask me. FO4 has the best gunplay, but doesn't capture that NV greatness very often (its main plot is very mediocre). If you're playing on PC, mods should be able to fix the worst stuff, though.

Try 3 again. It can be rough at the start. Keep playing and leveling up. Its a brilliant game.
Vegas is similar. But way more open ended in story. You drive it. You decide.
Both of those games are in my top 10. I did everything in them.

Fallout 4 is different. Its more stream lined. I never even beat it. Piece of shit if u ask me. But it has its moments.

I was in your boat. Get 4. I really didn't like fall out but fell in love with it. It had all of the quality of life improvements and it's great to get into the series.
Then play new vegas. 3 sucks in 2021.

I'm not one for super long dialogues.

I don't like super RPG elements.

That's why I think I might like the outer worlds & Fallout 4.

...ish.

It's certainly lighter on RPG elements than the last two but don't believe the poo pooers that just call it a shooter. It's still a huge game with a lot of stuff going on. The combat mechanics are a lot more competent than the others but you're still just as likely to get physically lost.
