providing deadlines for most shit I work on is difficult. Hes basically asking me how long a piece of string is.
yet he takes these, cements them in stone and provides them to the ceo. And then he consumes all my time with meetings and bullshit and I dont have any time to work on projects. And then during our catch-ups hes like youve had a week, how much progress have you made on X and week after week its none.

how do I deal with this situation

Eat him, and you become the new boss.

If my boss did that to me I'd think he was trying to get rid of me, consuming all my time with unrelated stuff yet still expecting progress on everything else. He knows how busy we are.
Mine does as well, but it seems his attitude changes when it comes to what he presents to the CEO. So he will be harping on about how overloaded we are. But then he will say to me you cant tell me you didnt spend any time on projects over the last 2 weeks. Thats not good enough. When its the truth. I can give rough goals, but I cant tell him with 100% certainty something will be resolved.

Like fixing a particular bug with an application. You dont know how long its going to take to investigate and fix unless its something youve fixed before.

After every project, just jot the time down and give him the average of similar stuff. Then tell him the average time you waste in meetings and bs, then add those times together

Dont include the time you take to update your resume

I dont really do any time management right now. I just work on what seems to be the highest priority and follow the moving target. If I started time tracking I would get even less done probably

Hmm, do you feel that your boss is more on trying to personally set you up for failure or just taking advantage of you to make himself look better to the CEO?

I got this a lot. It was often breaking my spine to make a deadline including staying late, and then he'd say stuff like 'I don't wanna be here all night' while he drank beer up front and I'm putting in extra time to get this thing ready by morning.

I'm so glad to not be doing that anymore....

to be honest, no. I feel like its coming from the top down. The board doesnt understand what I do, and wants to see work being done. due to the team Im part of, the progress they want to see is project related and they dont care about the smaller stuff I do. But recently it feels like 95% of my time is taken up by meetings, smaller stuff, and other things I didnt expect or plan for.
really it just stresses me out knowing that they want X project done, at the start I say I think I can get that done in a month and then week after week I dont really even get a chance to start on it and the deadline creeps closer.

Oh boy, yeah. I remember my old job. Their meetings unnecessarily dragged on because of topics that weren't even needed to be brought up in between departments. We discuss only things that need multiple departments to intervene now and get direct to the point. Less than an hour.
