idk, my friends are going on Friday to get a tattoo that my gf had to honor her (she died due to an autoimmune encephalitis and stroke last month) and Im gonna be the one to drive them. Money isnt the issue, with Biden Bux and tax return coming in, but Ive never gotten one before.

I also dont know if I want that specific one theyre getting (its an elephant with a ball balancing on its nose) or something else to honor her, but idk and Im not very creative with things like that.

I say do it. Better than getting a tattoo simply for the sake of getting one like other posters here. At least there's a reason behind it.

You should never get a tattoo that you aren't 100% sure you want.

I got my first one a few months ago for my birthday.

I only get one when it's like I feel incomplete without having it and I've considered the design for a long time. That's just me though, some people just get them on a whim and that's fine too. Everyone knows they're permanent but really consider what that means, you'll be asked about it, thinking of her, it'll be on you when you go to sleep, use the bathroom, etc.

Get it if you feel like it but I think you shouldn't get one out of obligation, you not getting one doesn't mean you aren't honoring her death.

Nah as someone who also worked in a shop, the whole iT hAs To HaVe MeAnInG thing is way overplayed. Some of mine do, some dont, its whatever.

Apparently. This is not an attitude that literally any moderately tattooed people or tattoo artists I know hold. Getting a tattoo because you enjoy it > anything fucking else.

Yeah Ive never met an artist that held the view that tattoos had to have meaning, in fact, Ive met many more that feel like people who have to come up with that kind of justification often do so for contrived reasons, and who think the best reason to get a tattoo is that you want it.

The thing is tattoos are entirely open to interpretation. Not all of my tattoos have some crazy deep profound meaning and I'm not saying they all should either. For a large number of people tattoo is just a novelty, that's all. Some people have respect for the art form and others don't.

See my original idea to honor her was whenever I got my Washington state tattoo, to put a little heart where her hometown is in the state as a little tribute to her, but is nothing too big/crazy thatll make it awkward for another significant other.

Oh yeah I know that. I just...feel like I should. I wont do anything Im not happy with tho, but I definitely want to do something, even if its small.
