a far cry from the olden days where screwing up often required you to replay the entire area over again

it's kind of an odd trade-off. older games tended to punish the player for mistakes and forcing them to improve via repetition, while newer games encourage reckless behavior and experimentation

I think gamers have come to view sparing checkpoints and having to repeat sections just to get back to where they were as annoyances.

And also, remember that much of the difficulty in older games was so they'd suck up quarters at an arcade, or at least from devs familiar with that approach.

And old console games were so expensive and short (speedrun as the crow flies) that padding the game in that way was necessary filler.

It is kinda neat, the repetitive hell of older games made you pro at them.

It's weird I can beat Mega Man X in less than a hour, never get hit once, and find it beyond easy.

Yet my children can't last 5 minutes without dying to point they rage quit and say game is impossible.

A lot of people don't understand that difficulty is a part of the game, like the music, jump arc, or iframes are. It's a cohesive experience. It's not that all games need to be so difficult or easy, just as not all music uses guitars; but you you wouldn't remove guitars from a song that has them, just so you could better hear the lyrics.

This just isn't true though. Games now are more diverse in terms of difficulty, but difficult games didn't disappear

I mostly play strategy games like Crusader Kings or Europa Universalis or Distant Worlds Universe or Civilization or simulation games like Cities Skylines or Capitalism Lab or Tropico or Planet Zoo.

I also like cRPGs like Divinity Original Sin or Disco Elysium

All I know is most games these days are lots of money and resources to make shit that ain't even worth it. That's why indie have come into their own in the last decade.
