ABCs reboot of The Wonder Years has found its new Kevin (or rather, Dean) in Elisha Williams. TV Line reports that Williams (Puppy Dog Pals) will play the lead role of Dean in the series, the analogue to Fred Savages Kevin in the original. Dean is described as an inquisitive and hopeful 12-year-old [who] is trying to figure out his place within his Black family and the world at large, while coming of age in a turbulent time. The official description of Dean adds, Though a little insecure, a tad awkward and a bit self-conscious, he is determined to make his mark on the world around him.

Savage, who is directing the pilot and is a co-executive producer, revealed the news to Williams alongside writer Saladin K. Patterson in a video call that was released online. You can see that below. Williams joins Saycon Sengbloh, who will play Deans mom Lillian, in the project.

The new series takes place in the 1960s like the original, set specifically in 1968 Montgomery, Alabama. The show centers on middle-class Williams family. The original show ran from 1988 through 1993 and was also set in 1968 to start, though the location of the Arnold family was never specified.

I'm surprised they are having it take place in the 1960s. Wasn't the big thing about the original Wonder Years that each episode was set exactly 20 years before the air date? I assumed that'd be what they do, so it starts in 1991 and goes forward from there.

Yeah, that would have been nice

Wonder Years is my favorite show, I've watched the first season so many times I can recite entire scenes.

This just feels like it's missing what made the show so great. It's a dad looking back on his normal childhood. The societal and historical events are for the most part right below the surface, as a kid you don't fully grasp the context of the things around you. The Vietnam War is waging, but Kevin is still just a normal kid with girl problems.

This reboot might be great, but it seems like they are taking a much less subtle approach by making it about a black family in Montgomery during the Civil rights movement. If they wanted a reboot, it should have been set in the 90s, that would've allowed them to tell new stories but still keep the same concept.

I actually love the premise of an analogue perspective to the suburban working class Arnolds. Fred Savage knows what he's doing and he wouldn't sign up for nostalgia-driven followup like his bro Ben if he didn't think this was a cool idea.

I hate to tell you this, but 20 years ago was 2001.

Oh shit. I know that shouldn't come as a surprise but I guess I just never thought about it. Where has the time gone, my goodness.

Reason enough not to have it be "20 years ago". The main difference would be that it's pre smart phones and pre social media. And pre/during war on terror.
