Mortality rate for smallpox is roughly 1/3. 300 million people died in just 1 century meaning an average of 3 million deaths a year. (Later years would see far less death because of the vaccine)

Those are global numbers, and you used a US death total for covid. 2.5 million people have died of covid in one year globally, and that is with advancements in health care and aggressive measures to curb the spread globally.
