I mean I really liked Man of Steel.

And I really enjoyed the Superman portions of BvS. It was a pretty great retelling of Death of Superman, with just the worst batman shit ever tacked on.
This is literally the opposite of what I've been hearing haha

The Snyder hate is definitely retroactively filling some kind of narrative. People loved Dawn of the Dead, 300 was a phenomenon, and I distinctly remember Watchmen being beloved at release. His style just became kind of stale.

I distinctly remember walking out of the theater after 300 and thinking "that was alright". Which is crazy because I was the perfect person to enjoy it being a 16 or 17 year old guy who loves action and violence. The visuals just took me out of it. My favorite part is the fight against the Immortals(?) which happens to be one of the few times he didn't use a ton of slo-mo and exaggerated effects.

Watchmen is fine and Dawn of the Dead is really good. Everything else he's done I've kind of hated

actually now that I think about it the two films of his I enjoy are a remake and a graphic novel adaptation where he tried to stick very close to the source material

anything that he makes which is "original" I hate, and even then I'm like 50/50 on stuff he adapts >.>

Zack Snyder literally has directed one original concept, which was Sucker Punch. Everything else he has made was based on an existing I.P.

Right, but I think comparing something like Watchmen where he tried to go shot for shot at times to the graphic novel vs his takes on Superman/Batman is pedantic :/

I've seen him mention he didn't like superheroes at least twice. There's an interview I remember him talking about how since he was a kid he never liked Batman or Superman and thought they were lame and that he loved the more indy titles with people shooting each other and blood and guts and stuff.

I mean, it pretty much shows with how he treats these characters.

Also, lol

RELEASE THE SOCIETY CUT

Anyway, the narrative that Snyder is, in a general critical sense, some kind of widely panned filmmaker is inaccurate. Dawn of the Dead, 300, and Watchmen were all well received, maybe the latter two being a bit more mixed. His animated owl film (yes, Sucker Punch is not his only original film) and Man of Steel got mixed reviews but still mostly positive. The only two films of his to get a thumping were Sucker Punch and Batman v. Superman. Sucker Punch was well deserved, but BvS was a bad theatrical edit and while I dont think that the directors cut would get positive reviews, it definitely would have done better. Now this gets (so far) good reviews. I think its more fair to say that his filmography is a mixed bag.

This is exactly what bothers me most about Snyder fanboys. They all seem to think he's an iconoclastic director who was canceled by critics for being non-pc. He's just an overdramatic filmmaker who has made a career of molding source material to fit his aesthetic, which I find largely dour.

4:3 is effective for minimalist films where two characters are talking in a small room and whatnot (see: The Lighthouse).

4:3 not just for a superhero movie but a SUPERHERO MOVIE THAT IS PREDICATED ON A LARGE GROUP OF CHARACTERS GETTING TOGETHER might be the dumbest thing I've ever heard of.

I discovered today this movie is rated R.

What the fuck how do you make a Justice League movie rated R? How do you block Superman behind an R rating? I was so sure this was going to be PG-13 still and told my buddy it absolutely is not rated R after he mentioned it.

I'm floored, and I'm sure this is old news, but wow.

It's a movie with characters meant to be accessible to children. And he made it so gunmetal-flavored grimdark that it's now not accessible to children. Like Superman is behind an R rating. That's utter nonsense.

That's what kills me. As a kid I would have been so excited to see a Justice League movie that was 4 hours.

But then I wouldn't be able to since it's entirely too mature for child me.

I have no problem with R rated superhero stuff. They have just as many if not more adult fans than kid fans. Most of these characters dont really come from child friendly source material anyways. As long as they arent rated G or PG its fine by me for the most part.

Theoretically I dont mind R rated superhero stuff, but that depends on the superhero.

Like even if youre an adult fan of Superman, you became a fan based on material that (with maybe a few exceptions) isnt really served by an R rating. an R rated Superman is potentially actually messing up stuff people liked about Superman stories in the first place.
