An overwhelming majority of people who have been hospitalized, needed a ventilator or died from Covid-19 have been overweight or obese, the CDC said in a new study Monday.

Among 148,494 adults who received a Covid-19 diagnosis during an emergency department or inpatient visit at 238 U.S. hospitals from March to December, 71,491 were hospitalized. Of those who were admitted, 27.8% were overweight and 50.2% were obese, according to the CDC report. Overweight is defined as having a body mass index of 25 or more, while obesity is defined as having a BMI of 30 or more.

The agency found the risk for hospitalizations, ICU admissions and deaths was lowest among individuals with BMIs under 25. The risk of severe illness sharply increased, however, as BMIs rose, particularly among people 65 and older, the agency said.

The problem is all the processed foods we eat are not good for us. The cheap foods are the subsidized grains. But the government wont change the subsidies from corn, wheat and soy to healthier fruits and vegetables to make those more affordable to the average American so that they can afford to be healthy.

I dont think the issue is fruits/veggies; those are pretty cheap. In my opinion it is that outside of fruits/veggies, options are pretty limited because we put sugar into everything from cereal to protein bars to bread. Even wheat bread has 4g of sugar per slice, even the healthiest all bran cereal still has 8g of sugar per serving, a lenny/Larry protein cookie has about 25g of sugar in just 1 cookie. Meanwhile we should only be eating about 25-30g of sugar daily so at a certain point it can be quite difficult to eat enough calories to not be malnourished while still not eating enough sugar to get fat.

40 hour fasting/16-8 intermittent fasting are both good strategies but we must do something about the sugar crisis in the country. Almost every food item is always indicating fat/salt levels for the health conscious buyer. Yet they hide that sugar is the most harmful product in all of these foods and we eat 90-100g of it a day in some cases.

Obesity covaries with a fuckton of stuff. I imagine that obesity certainly increases your risk of severe outcomes. However, this statistic certainly doesn't reflect that.

Of those who were admitted, 27.8% were overweight and 50.2% were obese, according to the CDC report.

So that's really not far off from the overall population of the US: 31.1% overweight, 42.5% obese.

I hope the fat acceptance angle of feminism is dead and buried once this all is over. How many has it killed convincing obese people and society in general the past few years to accept who they are?

Now that I think about it the concept of objectification also spawned around then as well. Along with the negative stigma in mainstream about eating healthy, and working out.

It is a risk factor, but it's still important to mention this as context. The part where the article mentions obesity in the overall population is just where TC cut it off. The stats without the context make it sound like Covid is mostly a fat people problem, which it isn't.

Theres definitely an issue with the cost of healthy food vs crap food. But theres still a problem with portion control in America and this concept of always needing to stuff yourself at meals. Portion sizes are ridiculous here. And at the end of the day calories in > calories out is what leads to weight gain. Healthy food means you feel fuller, longer because you are getting proper nutrition. But it doesnt help that there is some crazy food culture in America where people feel the need to eat endless bread or have a massive plate of food at a restaurant, giant soda drinks, etc. Its like some weird food insecurity.

Im someone who eats what I want, sometimes healthy and sometimes not. But I have good portion control and eat everything in moderation. Im no gym rat but I dont gain weight either. Ive posted my dinner here and always get a comment about how small my plate is. Yeah Im a 52 woman I dont need to eat a huge plate.

Considering almost half of America are overweight or obese, this statistic is somewhat misleading.

It's like saying "half the people who get measles are vaccinated" without acknowledging that 95% of people are vaccinated.

The National Center for Health Statistics estimates that, for 20152016 in the U.S., 39.8% of adults aged 20 and over were obese (including 7.6% with severe obesity) and that another 31.8% were overweight.

so within a few % points of the amount of people that are overweight or obese.

It's not misleading, the simple fact is obesity is unhealthy and comes with a wheel barrel of other health issues that make covid deadlier, requiring hospitalization. I thought you were a doctor. Stop denying science.

if 75% of people are X and then 78% of people who get Y have X, that isn't scientifically relevant data. if 30% of people are X and then 78% of people who get Y have X. That is scientifically relevant data.

And "denying science" would require that they were going around saying there is nothing wrong with being overweight and/or obese which has it's own giant list of health conditions associated with it.

but as always people who spout science denying are frequently people who understand science the least.
