A perfect 24-0 record, the only one in the Country. Couldn't make the tournament

Despite California Baptist's win over Grand Canyon in the conference finals, it will instead be Utah Valley who gets the WAC's automatic bid to March Madness. California Baptist will instead head to the women's NIT. The reason: the Lancers got too good too soon.

This is only California Baptist's third season at the Division I level, and the NCAA requires a four-year transition period in which reclassifying teams are banned from its most prestigious tournament.

A similar situation would have played out with the men's tournament as well had North Alabama, also in a Division I transition, beaten Liberty in the Atlantic Sun finals. Because of North Alabama's postseason ban, Liberty actually became the first team in the country to clinch a berth in the men's tournament.

In the case of California Baptist, Utah Valley was predetermined to get the bid by virtue of its 10-4 record in conference play.

It's only their 3rd year, I guess. And you need 4 to quality. I think that's the biggest reason what what I read

It's in the 3rd line, the rules state they can not participate in the tournament if they have been in the division for under 4 years. It's not discrimination, it's just how the rules are written.

I think it might be a good rule, tbh. I don't know anything about sports in general, but this is how I see it -

A team is in a Division with a bunch of good schools, they become smaller, and go to a weaker Division. They still have their Division 1 team and are now facing Division 2 teams, who are less good. 4 Years make it so that everyone on the Division 1 team isn't on the Division 2 team

Or something like that.

Dumb rule. I'm no basketball expert but this rule makes no sense. If you are good enough you should be able to compete. End of story

I said nothing like that, in this case it's tenure. It applies to everyone, it's a set structure within the NCAA.

I mean it literally says in the article the same thing would have happened to a mens team if they had won their game. The team they were playing against could have lost the game and still advanced because the first team didnt qualify

That makes sense for a team moving down a division, but not for a team moving up.

you literally said that it is not discrimination because it is the result of applying a rule as it is written. In this case, the rule is discriminatory on programs on the basis of age. We can also look at many, many rules, across contexts, that are discriminatory. Whether or not something is "in the rules" is not a basis for whether it's right or wrong morally/ethically (or whether or not it is discriminatory or not)
