Or year first then day month. Isn't that crazy?

America likes to do it month day year, Europe tends to do it day month year, and while it can get confusing to know which date is meant they're both fine in their own way.

But putting year first? These people are crazy.

15-05-24

How crazy do you have to be to do that?

Well honestly the perfect system is when they put a day that can't be confused for the month, so always start with 13 and above. That way, whether it's month first or day first, we'll know based on the date

I usually use year/month/day when naming files on a computer since they will stay in chronological order when sorted by name.

YYYYMMDD makes sense, in that it moves from less specific to more specific. It tracks with how we write numbers (larger, less specific digits on the left moving to more specific on the right).

Who does year - day - month? I don't see much merit in that ordering.

YDM makes no sense at all. YMD is very reasonable and is what we should do.
