House Republicans are protesting the inclusion of several books on the Navy's 2021 reading list.

Republican Reps. Doug Lamborn of Colorado and Vicky Hartzler of Missouri on Thursday evening sent a letter to Adm. Michael Gilday expressing concern about the inclusion of the following books on the Chief of Naval Operations Professional Reading Program (CNO-PRP) reading list: Ibram X. Kendi's "How to be an Antiracist," Michelle Alexander's "The New Jim Crow" and Jason Pierceson's "Sexual Minorities and Politics."

Is anyone even surprised at this?

Don't try to think about it too hard. These people get offended if someone says "Be a good person" because they view that as subliminal anti-white rhetoric.

None of those book titles sound like "acknowledging racism exists", they're critical race theory texts.

Maybe you didn't read the titles?

https://www.amazon.com/How-Be-Antiracist-Ibram-Kendi/dp/0525509283

https://www.amazon.com/New-Jim-Crow-Incarceration-Colorblindness/dp/1595586431

https://www.amazon.com/Sexual-Minorities-Politics-Jason-Pierceson/dp/1442227699

They are all acknowledging that racism and prejudice exist, and (per the definition of CRT), "seek to critically examine the law as it intersects with issues of race, and to challenge mainstream liberal approaches to racial justice.[1] CRT examines social and cultural issues as they relate to race, law, and social and political power."

So yes, they are examples of it - are you saying CRT and seeking to understand how racism came to be and how it is maintained is a bad thing? Or (in your words) "left wing racism"?

Books like "How to be an Antiracist" are actually quite problematic. They literally advocate discrimination and make arguments like "it is impossible to not be racist."

It's not good to have dumb books (even ones that claim noble goals) pushed onto people.

How could anyone learn to not be racist if everyone will always be racist? Are the books really invalidating themselves like that?

That would be like if the KKK wrote a book "How To Be Racist" and opened with "No one is racist and non-whites are deserving of respect."

You may be reading wrong.

I'm trying to find the exact quote, but it's something like "the only way to fight racist discrimination is with anti-racist discrimination" basically saying discrimination is a good thing if it in service of correcting representation imbalances.

Technically, banning murder and pedophilia is discrimination, but I doubt you'd make the argument in a discussion on those topics.

No the book says you can't be "not racist".

Quotes:
  • There is no in-between safe space of not racist.
  • Whats the problem with being not racist? It is a claim that signifies neutrality: I am not a racist, but neither am I aggressively against racism.
  • There is no neutrality in the racism struggle. The opposite of racist isnt not racist. It is antiracist.
  • The claim of not racist neutrality is a mask for racism.

I'm not actually sure that would count as discrimination. But what I'm talking about are things like "it's ok to reject more qualified people based solely on their race." (Not a direct quote but ideas like this are part of the overall argument)

How do you equate "fuck racists" with "discrimination on the basis of race is ok"?

Do the books actually say all racists are a certain race or that a certain race is always racist?
