So my restaurant is starting to prepare for the reopening of things so different people have new expectations. For example I'm a bartender, and only one other guy is too. When we were slow (e.g: the last entire year) him and I would work behind the bar together and split the tables that came in, and an extra server would fill in the gaps. So we'd be very much in tandem, and the entire year ran flawlessly and we got along great.

We went from 25% capacity, maximum 4 per party, to 50% and maximum of 8. We've more than doubled our capacity so, now, one bartender is locked behind the bar, one is a server/barback (running for supplies) and the rest stays the same. Today was my very first day in over a year to be completely alone behind bar. We had him and five other servers, and we could still barely keep up. Our average day all during the pandemic was 2k in sales. Today we hit 14k.

I was solely responsible for making every single drink that touched anyone's lips, and drink sales were six thousand of those dollars. A jack and coke is $5. Do the math there. For an eleven hour shift and no breaks I was consistently happy, rocking it, listening to music and keeping up with the work. My dude was so butthurt about having to serve tables and wait for me on his drinks. He treated me like shit ,said I was too slow, said he wished it was him back there instead and made me feel like complete garbage. Meanwhile I had to cross-communicate with six people, all of different skill levels -- some even brand new today -- while getting no tables of my own to make my own money.

My bar was spotless. It took me fifteen minutes to clear my station, and fully restock, after a 14 thousand dollar day. At the end he's still so frustrated that he couldn't be the ~bartender~ today, the one coworker I thought had my back didn't see my moment to shine and root for me but instead clawed me down out of bitterness.

Fucking blows, man. People suck.

I'm sorry dude.

I worked behind a bar for over 5 years.

Yes. People do indeed suck.

In a brief moment today I thought I had a break to literally fix my shoelaces and sit my ass down for sixty seconds. I walked through the back and, instead, found a waitress crying. She started last week; she forgot to ring in a woman's entree at a six top party and had to fess up to it. I told her to take a breather, and that I'd handle it.

Went out to the party and saw smiles, so I wanted to just be fun with them. I apologized, explained the situation, asked them what their favorite shot was and went back to bar, made the queue of tickets, then brought out a round on me. They loved it, were grateful, and tipped the waitress 30%.

This took ten minutes, and the day was very eventful. Guess I sucked today though.

Ugh, thats really why I left that industry to a certain extent.. the money is great and its so great to be around people but some of the people you work with and the boss I had at my final job before I just ended up leaving always were these people who drain the fuck out of you with negativity :^(

its just like yeah I get it man, but Im suffering too shit

the best thing to do is just really talk it over about how of course youd do anything to make his life easier and how you appreciate how they make yours easier

only goes so far but, yknow

keep going with the good service though.. thats really such an awesome thing to have someone who is genuinely happy to serve you. It was a great experience for me to have learned that taking it out on the customer (in any industry) or co-workers just makes everything completely worse.
